Defamation of Gonçalo Amaral begins to be judged

The trial for alleged defamation of Gonçalo Amaral began today in the Court of Faro, after being postponed twice, without the presence of former Inspector of Judicial Police and the attorney and defendant Marcos Aragão Correia.

The lawyer and university professor Aragão Correia António Pedro Dores are accused of allegedly defaming the former inspector, who investigated for nearly eight years the disappearance of Jane, daughter of Leonor Cipriano.

One would think that failing to provide a correct address would be contempt of court.

As for defamation. In our legal system (as in all those descended from the British system), defamation can only occur if damages result. So if you are a convicted for perjury, it is doubtful that you would be successful in a libel claim when it concerns the case you lost. But Portugal is different, and I thought that this was some sort of criminal libel case, which we have no equivalent of. Libel/defamation is only a civil action in our legal system(s).

Need to add that it is a criminal action if the one being libelled is the govt. In other words it is criminal to defame the govt, not the politicians but govt depts, heads of depts etc. I am not sure if the criminal tag applies when someone defames a politician, as they do it to each other all the time.

Oh no, It is even worse than we thought!

Amaral was contacted by a policeman - for sure at his home, now at Olivais, Lisbon. But apparently because of the trial in the Algarve he asked this policeman to inform that he didn’t want to reveal his address, but, anyway, the court could always send the notifications to the Police Station/Olivais, under the responsibility of the “Intendente Lopes Martins” (“Intendente” is a police – PSP - patent).

Isabel Duarte asked the court to issue a certification, in order to communicate this fact to the High Command of the PSP and to open an inquiry. Which she will do.

Gonçalo Amaral missing on trial for alleged defamation.

Seems he didn't show for his videoconferencing, and he was nowhere near the police station
He only told a policeman,the court could always send the notifications to the Police Station/Olivais.

The court tried to contact Gonc by phone and he had the phone disconnected all day. Besides that, the court doesn’t know where he lives, and therefore, doesn’t know to where the court can send the notifications.

The judge determined there should be a deep investigation about the concrete Amaral domicile, to inform the court.

In other words the court wants Gonc's actual residence address!!

Running Scared, is he? I would think he should be. He cannot possibly win this one, unless The Portuguese Judiciary want to make fools of themselves yet again.
But who knows with the Fascist Regime that appears to have been running the show since The Glorious Revolution.

One wonders if Portugal is actually prepared to expose these people.

if by chance someone has come across with him, it is best to use antiseptic disinfectant or gloves, or even a mask to protect nose and mouth from germs.

Is it contempt of court to fail to turn up to a court when you are required? And even weirder is that it is Gonc's action.
