Thank you Mr Bennett for your reply. As the photographer involved there was never a complaint against me, with the PCC or anyone else. You knew this at the time of course, when you were posting incorrect items on various forums.
I have yet to work out where the " hard cow " reference came from, it certainly didn't come from me while talking to Mr Butler.

As you may pile blame on Deborah Butler, it was you that made up comments surrounding the invitation to picture Ms Butler and the invitation to go and speak to Mr Butler. On this second matter it was a concern to get the " facts right" that lead to the visit.

Your comment "I wish you no ill-will whatsoever but I find very distasteful many of the antics of tabloids like the ‘Express’." You are of course able to express your views, as I am with regard " ambulance-chasers " and your very distasteful antics.

Finally I received my copy of 60 Reasons yesterday, which I requested in a recent email to you. I sent off my £5 and received the book. I didn't use my real name of course because thanks to you, is very well known. I did however prove that you are still selling copies of this publication, but more of this later.

Dear Mr Gunnill

In response to your three messages tonight, one by one:

1. Could you please answer the question Mr Bennett and not just paste and copy?

Thank you.

REPLY: I replied to aliberte 2 within 4 hours and he was perectly happy with my reply, which did answer his question. You have come along 35 days later, demanding instant answers. To what, to aliberte2’s 35-day-old question .

2. It is not a photographer's job to choose THE photograph or photographs that go into a newspaper. It is a photographers job to provide a choice to the newspaper.

I would be grateful if Mr Bennett could answer the question.

REPLY: You say ‘the question’. I think aliberte2 asked three questions. If you state precisely what you mean by ‘the question’, you stand a better chance of getting an answer.

And also is he still selling copies of 60 Reasons within the United Kingdom?

REPLY: No.

4. I will keep asking the same question. Please don't hide behind paste & copy, answer the question, please!

REPLY: You posted this 3rd message just 35 minutes after your first question. It appears at first sight that you were not blessed with huge reserves of patience. I am happy if you subsequently prove my initial impression to have been correct.

Let’s just review the history of this matter, without repeating matters that have already been adjudicated on by the Press Complaints Commission.

On 14 August, four members of The Madeleine Foundation delivered leaflets in various parts of Leicestershire, part of a national campaign in which tens of thousands of them had been distributed. One person in Rothley complained. Then the McCanns’ relatives Mr and Mrs Kennedy complained. One or two others were interviewed by the BBC and also criticised the leaflet drop in Rothley. We know from calls that we have had that there are others in Rothley who do not believe the McCanns’ version of events. They will not however speak out publicly.

On Saturday 17 August I received a call from a ‘Sunday Express’ reporter. He purported to be interested in our campaign and eagerly received details about the case which suggested that Madeleine McCann had not been abducted, which he said he did not know. In the event, the ‘Express’ used none of this information in their story and still have not used it.

Following the account of your visit to Ms Debbie Butler, which she gave me, I filed a written complaint on her behalf which is on the record and I don’t need to repeat.

I accept entirely that the editor has the right to choose his photos. There’s no use at present publishing a smiling John Terry which is why the papers are currently printing pictures of him looking angry or tense.

I regard it as unacceptable, however, to deliberately seek to portray someone in the worst possible light - and equally reprehensible to ask a photographer, as may have happened in this case, to proactively seek a photograph portraying someone in a negative light.

These adverse stories in various newspapers resulted, paradoxically, in a huge upsurge of interest in our work. Hundreds of thousands of extra hits were received on our website. Hundreds of extra booklets were bought. Over a dozen new people joined. We received many offers of help. This is because there is a huge swathe of British people who do not buy the McCanns’ version of events in Praia da Luz. They are hungry for information which their mainstream newspapers were not giving them.

Our former webmaster did things in respect of you of which I heartily disapproved as I think you know. It was unacceptable of him to publish an article on our website about you without telling me what he was going to do. As soon as I became aware of it I ordered him to remove it. We immediately began a search for another webmaster. He also set up a ‘Mike Gunnill info’ site. That was off his own bat, nothing to do with the Madeleine Foundation. It was another reason for seeking a new webmaster.

In October after receiving hostile messages from Ms Butler I decided that it was entirely inappropriate that I continue to represent her in her dispute with Express Newspapers and accordingly informed her and the PCC that I was no longer doing so.

Finally, I had a jolly good laugh at ‘vaguely1’ claiming I didn’t answer questions! I have a formidable reputation on here and elsewhere for answering them promptly and fairly, to the extent that my colleagues in The Madeleine Foundation say I spend too much time answering them. Not all questions asked of me are polite and very few say ‘thank you’ for the answers.

By contrast, questions asked of ‘pro-McCanns’ are invariably dodged by them, remain unanswered or result in abuse. As for ‘vaguely1’, it was but two days ago that he refused to answer a simple question simply saying he ‘couldn’t be bothered right now’.

I’m happy to answer reasonable and polite questions. I wish you no ill-will whatsoever but I find very distasteful many of the antics of tabloids like the ‘Express’.

Papers like the ‘Express’ have shifted a very long way from telling people the truth. If sensation and outright lies help to sell papers, the ‘Express’ will do it. And their photographers do as they’re told.

Twice now Bennett has managed to get me banned from a forum for answering his questions and for asking him questions which he had no answers to and I was NEVER rude or abusive. This man is nothing but a liar, I hope someone on Havern's points this little matter out to him, that it is not pros that dodge questions it is him and when he has no answers he gets the forum's admin to ban the member!

Now he has knowingly sold this book he has breached his terms and conditions with the High Court and I think that Carter Ruck will now be advising kate and Gerry to sue him for the £50.000. he is in huge trouble, wondered if he has replied to Mike Gunnill yet?

Spot the LIE!

Bennett's original Complaint to the PCC he wrote:

6. The leaflet drop did not involve 10 people, it involved 3. That was also inaccurate.

Of course he has been caught out in this lie since then and photographed actually in Rothley and he was there at the leaflet drop. He is such a bare faced liar!

STATEMENT ABOUT THE MADELEINE FOUNDATION CONFERENCE 27/28 FEBRUARY 2010
Near Nottingham East Midlands Airport
Issued 2 February 2010

Dear Members, Supporters and Followers

1. Gonçalo Amaral unable to attend our Conference

We’re
sorry to report that we have now heard from Snr Gonçalo Amaral that he
is, after all, unable to attend our Conference. As you know, he and his
wife enthusiastically accepted our invitation last August. In
anticipation of his visit, we had made a booking for him and his wife
at a top East Midlands hotel.

Since then, however, he has become
involved in three separate sets of litigation. First of all, a civil
libel suit which has already resulted in his book: ‘The Truth About A
Lie’ being banned in his native Portugal and which recently needed a
3-day court hearing. The McCanns are claiming damages of 1.2 million
euros against him - over £1 million. There will be a further hearing
about this matter later this month.

In addition, his appeal is
under way in relation to his conviction last year as a result of which
he received a suspended 18-month jail sentence for allegedly filing a
false report in the notorious case of Joana Cipriano..

In this
respect we remind readers that it was Gonçalo Ameal and his team of
detectives that succeeded in bringing the cruel mother and uncle of
8-year-old Joana to trial for her murder. They are now behind bars for
20 years for their wicked crimes. They had told police originally that
Joana had been abducted.

Yet in what The Madeleine Foundation
has no hesitation in calling a political show trial last year, lies
from Joana’s mother and from staff at the Odemira prison where Leonor
Cipriano was in prison awaiting trial led to Snr Amaral’s conviction in
what we say were trumped-up political charges. His appeal has been
delayed for inexplicable reasons by the Portuguese authorities. He is
desperate to clear his name.

On top of all that, he faces a
further criminal trial in relation to more allegations, which we once
again believe to be wholly false, made by the former partner of Leonor
Cipriano.

Unsurprisingly, therefore, in an e-mail message we received late last week, Gonçalo Amaral wrote to us:

“Dear Mr Bennett,

Thank
you very much for your email, and for the support that you express. I
would like to thank you for the invitation for your Foundation's
conference. Unfortunately, due to professional and personal
commitments, it will not be possible for me to attend. I wish you much
success in your endeavours to assist in the discovery of truth and the
pursuit of justice. Best regards,

Gonçalo Amaral”

2. Madeleine Foundation Conference 27/28 February 2010 to go ahead

We
shall still be holding our Conference, over two days, as promised, at a
venue within 10 miles of Nottingham East Midlands Airport. For those
travelling by train, we can tell you that the nearest rail station will
be Nottingham Central. There is a good public transport connection from
there to our venue.

As with our other conferences, all are
welcome who genuinely question the McCanns’ account of events in Praia
da Luz. Please register with us beforehand. Only those pre-registered
will be able to attend. The actual venue will be disclosed by e-mail or
telephone to all those who have registered with us before the event.

The
Conference venue will be open Saturday 27th 12noon to 6..00pm and
Sunday 28th 10.00am to 4.00pm. The Annual General Meeting of The
Madeleine Foundation, for members only, will take place there on the
Sunday from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

3. Committee Meeting 23 January 2010

The Committee of The Madeleine Foundation met on 23 January and a separate report will be sent to members.

4. New book: “The Madeleine McCann Case Files: Volume 1”

This
book, which presents to the public eight of the key documents in the
investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann released
publicly by the Portuguese police, is with our printers and will be out
we hope by the end of February. Foundation members will receive a free
copy. The cover price of £4.00 includes postage to any U.K. destination
and, as with our ‘60 Reasons’ booklet, is intended only to cover costs.

5. Report by Chairman Grenville Green on his visit to Lisbon for the McCann v. Amaral libel trial, 11 to 16 January

“Because
I feel strongly about the verbal abuse directed at the Portuguese
police in our British media regarding the McCann case, I felt compelled
to travel to Lisbon to show my support for Gonçalo Amaral at the 3-day
hearing in January.

“I flew out with my son Stephen, who has
Down’s Syndrome, on 11 January and on the following day I was able to
stand outside the Palasio da Justice, the Courthouse in Lisbon, where
Gonçalo Amaral was defending his right of free speech, enshrined in
Article 37.0 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.

“I
held up two notices, in English, reading: ‘Freedom and Democracy on
Trial in Lisbon’ and ‘Portuguese Republic Constitution on Trial in
Lisbon’.

“The British press in general do not report fairly on
Snr Amaral and, in my experience, do not always report the truth. The
latest insults to his integrity were the recent report on the BBC and
certain tabloids that he had said ‘F___ the McCanns’ just before the
hearing to a British reporter. He speaks very little English and first
reports said he had actually said: ‘Nao, forca aos McCanns’ which
translates as ‘No, good luck to the McCanns’. Later, Snr Amaral
clarified that he’d actually said ‘Nao, fala com McCanns’, which our
Portuguese friends say translates as ‘No, speak to the McCanns’.

“This
vilification in the British press is typical of the ignorance and
biased reporting of elements of the media regarding this case. To
obtain an accurate over-view, including world-wide comments, I would
encourage you to read the internet site of Joana Morais.

“I demonstrated in support of Snr Amaral outside the court, then attended the hearing for two-and-a-half days.

“On
the Thursday evening, my son and I went to a fund-raising dinner at
Frei Antonio, a restaurant in Mafra (approx 30 miles from Lisbon).. We
were warmly welcomed, and one woman we met there told us about her
demonstration outside the court. She had handed out red carnations
which have come to symbolise a peaceful revolution in Portugal's
history. She had offered a symbolic flower to a VIP who had refused to
take it. When asked why, he had replied: ‘I don't believe in it’. She
asked, ‘What don't you believe in, peaceful revolution or free speech?’

“That
evening I purchased Snr Amaral's second book, just published, entitled:
‘A Mordaca Inglesa - a historia de um livro proibido” (The English Gag
- the story of a banned book). It’s an account of the banning of his
first book and the attempt by the British government, as he sees it, to
silence a Portuguese citizen.

“This Police Inspector, on a
matter of principle, had found it necessary to leave the job he loved -
incurring loss of income and substantial loss of pension rights - in
order to write his first book, ‘Maddie: The Truth About a Lie’. It
dealt with the evidence he uncovered as senior detective in the
Madeleine McCann case.

“We reluctantly had to leave our
new-found friends as the taxi was waiting. Snr Amaral shook my hand
warmly and agreed to be photographed with us. I was left with a
profound impression of a man with a depth of character who was gentle,
thoughtful and warm. Several people had spoken that evening to warm
applause, thus showing their unshakeable admiration for his courage.
The McCanns’ libel action against him continues in February, but my
fear is that decisions have already been made. I hope and pray that I
am proved wrong and that Portugal's constitution prevails!”

6. Book by Stephen Marsden: ‘Faked Abduction’

It
has been reported that our former webmaster, Mr Steve Marsden, is to
publish a book on the Madeleine McCann case called ‘Faked Abduction’.
Whilst we may well agree with much of its contents, we cannot recommend
this book to the public. From what we have learned, Mr Marsden is
intending to reproduce the contents of Snr Amaral’s book without the
permission of him or his publishers. Moreover, we understand that he is
making use of a translation of the book into English by a lady called
‘Anna’, once again without her permission. We cannot possibly support a
book which, from our understanding, is guilty of a double plagiarism.
Furthermore, unlike The Madeleine Foundation books which are priced
only to cover costs, we understand that Mr Marsden intends to profit
from the sale of his book.

Was there no PCC Complaint Made Against Mike Gunnill the Photographer? If Not, How Come? And Then Why Did Stevo Do What He did? (Speculation on That Last Point Welcome).

Here is my complaint to the P.C.C. about the Sunday Express article. The PCC rejected the complaint, saying that the newspaper had an 'absolute right' to its opinions and had not made significant errors of fact.

Steve Marsden who was then the webmaster for The Madeleine Foundation was personally outraged by Mike Gunnill's conduct. He set up a dummy Mike Gunnill website which contained some strong language. That was his own decision and nothing to do with his job as Madeleine Foundation webmaster.

However, he also posted a hostile article about Mike Gunnill on our website, which he had no authority to do. As soon as I found out about it, I ordered him to take it down. That incident led directly to our deciding that it was now time for us to seek a new webmaster.

Here's the original complaint to the P.C.C.:

To: Press Complaints Commission

Wednesday 19 August 2009

Dear Sir,

I act for Miss Debbie Butler in the matter of her formal complaint to you about the contents of Sunday's front-page article: "The McCanns' Stalker". This is a complaint under the Press Complaints Commission code and a copy is being sent to Scott Langham at the Press Complaints Commission for immediate action.

A summary of Miss Butler's complaints is as follows:

The 'Sunday Express', like all other newspapers, has a duty under the Press Complaints Code to be fair and accurate.Against those benchmarks, here are the complaints about the Sunday Express article that Miss Butler now makes. For the record, her address is [withheld]:

1. Describing Debbie Butler as a 'stalker' in respect of one leaflet drop in Rothley and nothing else was neither fair nor accurate. Making it a front-page leaflet with a picture clearly exposes her to risk of unfair attack. What she has done is distribute a factual leaflet. There is absolutely no course of conduct by her in relation to the McCanns that could remotely be described as 'stalking'.

2. Describing '10 Reasons' as a 'hate leaflet' (one villager was quoted as saying the leaflet was 'drumming up hate' and the 'Sunday Express' described it as 'highly inflammatory') was grossly unfair and grossly inaccurate, especially as the 'Sunday Express' did not explain the contents of the leaflet

3. The 'Sunday Express' deliberately chose the worst photograph they could take of her to portray her as 'a hard cow', which she was not. That was manifestly unfair

4. Neither Debbie Butler nor anyone else in the Madeleine Foundation sent a leaflet to Brian and Janet Kennedy. We do not know where she lives. This was therefore inaccurate.

5. It was not a 'late-night' leaflet drop. It took place between 3pm and 6pm. That was also therefore inaccurate.

6. The leaflet drop did not involve 10 people, it involved 3. That was also inaccurate.

7. Dr Gerald McCann was allowed to get away with describing the leaflet as 'despicable lies'. The 'Sunday Express' made no attempt to inform its readers that the content of the leaflet was the truth and that the McCanns had never rebutted any of the claims made in either '60 Reasons' or '10 Reasons'. This was grossly unfair and inaccurate. The leaflet was not 'lies' nor 'despicable lies'. It was the truth.

8. Debbie Butler was described in the 'Sunday Express' article as 'a single parent family with two children'. A more accurate description would have been 'a successful Kent businesswoman' - a fact which the reporter was made well aware of. The mere description of her as 'single parent' was unfair.

And their photographers do as they’re told

by vaguely1 Today at 8:26 am

I regard it as unacceptable, however, to deliberately seek to portray someone in the worst possible light

And yet you altered the interviewers question to Mr McCann about where he found strength from to how did he feel when he found out Madeleine was missing in your leaflets to show him in the worst possible light. And people still quote the question and answer on here and elsewhere, because you stated it as fact.

I wonder if you may consider putting that right too, on behalf of the foundation that made the 'error'.

eta: You asked me what the two charities linked to the McCann fundraising 'actually did' and then made a comment how one of them was related to Steven Gateley (sp) then made a comment about him dying after a night out with 'this bloke and that bloke' a somewhat dismissive and insulting remark considering his tragic death at such a young age, but I presumed that's because he was homosexual......

The answer, to what the two charities actually do is on their websites, they do GOOD and POSITIVE things for people. They can explain it to you much better than I can....let me know if you want the links, which I previously provided for you back in the thread where you queried their worth, and if they were even charities.

I wish you well Mr Gunnill, and am stunned at the level of cyberstalking and hate you've received for, as is quite apparent, taking a series of photographs of a Foundation member with their permission.

The internet is fully of crazy, crazy people who have no idea of the boundaries they cross or the damage they do to people's lives.

Damn!.....there goes my forum break.

by ufercoffy Today at 9:17 am

So the foundation member gave her permission for the photograph to be taken, but I doubt she gave her permission for the 'hard cow' or 'McCanns stalker' headline to go with it. That was downright devious.

But I don't condone the problems that Mr Gunnill received afterwards because, as he said, he takes the photographs and the journalists write the story.

A nasty business brought about by the McCanns lying and the Foundation trying to put across a different version even if people disagreed with their methods. But surely that also comes down to the media for refusing to publish the facts nd trying to brainwash people into believing the McCanns.

The media should take responsibility about something as terrible as the disappearance, and possible death, of a young child.

What did little Madeleine ever do to deserve this betrayal by her own country? It's really quite sickening.

by ]vaguely1 Today at 9:18 am

Hold up, it was Mr Bennett that said she looked like a hard cow, not the paper.....surely?

eta, Have you actually seen what has happened to Mr Gunnills web presence? If that's not stalking I don't know what is.

by ufercoffy Today at 10:04 am

Who's done the stalking? Is it Stevo and Deborah?

And sorry if I got the 'hard cow' reference wrong.

by mikegunnill Today at 10:20 am

I did however prove that you are still selling copies of this publication, but more of this later.

by vaguely1 Today at 10:24 am

@ Uffercoffy: The original tracking down? I think there was a bit of a joint effort going on there. I only read posts by Mr Bennett on the subject because of the forum I was reading at the time, but I don't believe that it was a single handed effort, or that he was completely aware of what it would lead to.

The damage on the web....Stevo.

Maybe someone could clarify whether the paper referred to Ms Butler as a hard cow? As far as I'm aware this was only said by Mr Bennett.

The whole thing is utter madness.

No sorry, my opinion doesn't matter.

by ufercoffy Today at 10:56 am

It does matter but I realise that was a question you wouldn't want to answer and I apologise for putting you on the spot.

But, you know, these forums probably wouldn't exist if the media presented both sides of the story in a fair way. Then we wouldn't be called 'ambulance chasers'. I don't think we're ambulance chasers, we just want to know the truth about what happened to Madeleine. Something isn't right with the whole case and people want to know what happened to that little girl who was abandoned every night with her siblings

Er, I think from Tracy Gamble, who initially copied some of them to Debbie Butler.

Ms Butler suddenly switched sides after talking to Clarence Mitchell and appears to have forwarded these e-mails on to Carter-Ruck (or elsewhere).

" Statement from Mike Gunnill
Thursday, 04 February 2010 09:25 Raptor

mikegunnill Today at 9:09 am

Link to post On Jill Havern's Forum

1) A courier this morning at 08.00 collected the envelope, 60 Reasons book, 10 Reasons leaflet, a receipt signed by Anthony Bennett plus emails between myself and Mr Bennett. The book was purchased by contacting Mr Bennett directly via email. The money was posted to his home address in Harlow. Cash was sent ( £5 ) as payment, because I didn't want to send a cheque made payable to Mrs Bennett as requested by Anthony Bennett at the same address.

2) Mr Bennett has admitted selling a copy of 60 Reasons to me. There are two further examples but I only required proof of one sale.

3) I am grateful to this forum for allowing me to make public and open contact with Mr Anthony Bennett.

4) The third party has asked me not make any further comment or postings, which I have agreed to do. I have also agreed to make a personal statement to the third party.

END

Mike as you will recall was on the receiving end of a particularly nasty personal attack led by Steve Marsden, the web master of the then Madeleine Foundation website. In reaction to this attack Mike regrettably had to close down his website during this attack. The nature of this attack will not be of any great surprise to anyone who has been unlucky enough to be targeted by the old 3 Arguidos mob, however they all made a huge mistake by choosing to attack Mike and to class him as being part of a greater conspiracy that involves ex-moderators of the 3 Arguidos, people who have openly criticised the hatred nurtured on Ryan and Sluming's website, bloggers and of course members of the Raptors team.

Mr Bennett I understand was fully aware of the legal bindings issued to him by Carter Ruck, the London based legal team that act for the McCanns. In selling the Foundation's Reasons booklet to Mike he has by all accounts broken this agreement.

The ramifications of such an action are very serious indeed."

Dr. Gerald McCann: I call my second witness, Mike Gunnill, a.k.a. Peter Trawin, a.k.a Jason Peter, a.k.a. ‘petert’ on the JustAThoughtYouKnow forum. He appears today as Mike Gunnill. Mike, why did you put Mr Sangerte up to getting hold of a booklet from Mr Bennett?

It will be interesting if this leads to McCann v. Bennett in the High Court.

Dr Gerald McCann: I call my first witness, Michael Sangerte. Mr Sangerte, why did you e-mail Mr Bennett on 13 January?

Mr Sangerte: Mike Gunnill put me up to it. I said I lived in Reading, but that was a lie. I didn’t want my e-mails published. It wasn’t because I thought this would be an important document in history. That was another lie.

Mr Gunnill: Um, on behalf of you and your wife, I was helping Carter-Ruck to get evidence against him.

Bennett is panicking and for an ex solicitor his grasp of the law is utterly abysmal. Mike Gunnill is perfectly entitled to use an "agent" or an alias. The only fact the judge will be interested in is Bennett sold a book and asked for payment to be made to a member of his family knowing fully well he was breaking the agreement he entered into. This dishonesty will not save him and neither will his little scenario of how he thinks the judge will react in court.

It is obvious this man is not going to stop until he is stopped in law, he has so far got away with stalking, vexatious litigants, making libellous comments, slander and defamation, the attorney general Baroness Scotland has allowed him to get away with his disgusting behaviour. He has accused the Essex police of being gun and drug running murderers, he has done his best to frustrate the search for a small child and make her parents lives even more unbearable than they are already, he has upset countless people, jumping on high profile band wagons, he is also trying to make money out Madeleine McCann by selling his odious libellous leaflets and booklets, something he has blatantly carried on doing, despite being ordered by a court to stop.
It was NOT just the one book Bennett has sold, he has sold a number of books since being instructed to stop. If he wants to deny this, he will deny it at his peril, there are other people who will testify to purchasing these items from Bennett, he will quite simply be proved a liar.

I think this is no longer a civil matter, this is now a criminal matter and something has to be done about him, he should either go to prison or be sectioned under the mental health act. I don't care which as long as he is prevented in future from causing havoc and distress to others.

As you know, he and his wife enthusiastically accepted our invitation last August. In anticipation of his visit, we had made a booking for him and his wife at a top East Midlands hotel.
Since then, however, he has become involved in three separate sets of litigation. First of all, a civil libel suit which has already resulted in his book: ‘The Truth About A Lie’ being banned in his native Portugal and which recently needed a 3-day court hearing. The McCanns are claiming damages of 1.2 million euros against him – over £1 million. There will be a further hearing about this matter later this month.
In addition, his appeal is under way in relation to his conviction last year as a result of which he received a suspended 18-month jail sentence for allegedly filing a false report in the notorious case of Joana Cipriano..
In this respect we remind readers that it was Gonçalo Ameal and his team of detectives that succeeded in bringing the cruel mother and uncle of 8-year-old Joana to trial for her murder. They are now behind bars for 20 years for their wicked crimes. They had told police originally that Joana had been abducted.
Yet in what The Madeleine Foundation has no hesitation in calling a political show trial last year, lies from Joana’s mother and from staff at the Odemira prison where Leonor Cipriano was in prison awaiting trial led to Snr Amaral’s conviction in what we say were trumped-up political charges. His appeal has been delayed for inexplicable reasons by the Portuguese authorities. He is desperate to clear his name.
On top of all that, he faces a further criminal trial in relation to more allegations, which we once again believe to be wholly false, made by the former partner of Leonor Cipriano.
Unsurprisingly, therefore, in an e-mail message we received late last week, Gonçalo Amaral wrote to us:

“Dear Mr Bennett,
Thank you very much for your email, and for the support that you express. I would like to thank you for the invitation for your Foundation’s conference. Unfortunately, due to professional and personal commitments, it will not be possible for me to attend. I wish you much success in your endeavours to assist in the discovery of truth and the pursuit of justice. Best regards,

Gonçalo Amaral

2. Madeleine Foundation Conference 27/28 February 2010 to go ahead
We shall still be holding our Conference, over two days, as promised, at a venue within 10 miles of Nottingham East Midlands Airport. For those travelling by train, we can tell you that the nearest rail station will be Nottingham Central. There is a good public transport connection from there to our venue.
As with our other conferences, all are welcome who genuinely question the McCanns’ account of events in Praia da Luz. Please register with us beforehand. Only those pre-registered will be able to attend. The actual venue will be disclosed by e-mail or telephone to all those who have registered with us before the event.
The Conference venue will be open Saturday 27th 12noon to 6..00pm and Sunday 28th 10.00am to 4.00pm. The Annual General Meeting of The Madeleine Foundation, for members only, will take place there on the Sunday from 1.00pm to 4.00pm.

3. Committee Meeting 23 January 2010
The Committee of The Madeleine Foundation met on 23 January and a separate report will be sent to members.

4. New book: “The Madeleine McCann Case Files: Volume 1”
This book, which presents to the public eight of the key documents in the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann released publicly by the Portuguese police, is with our printers and will be out we hope by the end of February. Foundation members will receive a free copy. The cover price of £4.00 includes postage to any U.K. destination and, as with our ‘60 Reasons’ booklet, is intended only to cover costs.

5. Report by Chairman Grenville Green on his visit to Lisbon for the McCann v. Amaral libel trial, 11 to 16 January
Because I feel strongly about the verbal abuse directed at the Portuguese police in our British media regarding the McCann case, I felt compelled to travel to Lisbon to show my support for Gonçalo Amaral at the 3-day hearing in January.

I flew out with my son Stephen, who has Down’s Syndrome, on 11 January and on the following day I was able to stand outside the Palasio da Justice, the Courthouse in Lisbon, where Gonçalo Amaral was defending his right of free speech, enshrined in Article 37.0 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic.
“I held up two notices, in English, reading: ‘Freedom and Democracy on Trial in Lisbon’ and ‘Portuguese Republic Constitution on Trial in Lisbon’.
“This vilification in the British press is typical of the ignorance and biased reporting of elements of the media regarding this case. To obtain an accurate over-view, including world-wide comments, I would encourage you to read the internet site of Joana Morais.
“I demonstrated in support of Snr Amaral outside the court, then attended the hearing for two-and-a-half days.
“The British press in general do not report fairly on Snr Amaral and, in my experience, do not always report the truth. The latest insults to his integrity were the recent report on the BBC and certain tabloids that he had said ‘F___ the McCanns’ just before the hearing to a British reporter. He speaks very little English and first reports said he had actually said: ‘Nao, forca aos McCanns’ which translates as ‘No, good luck to the McCanns’. Later, Snr Amaral clarified that he’d actually said ‘Nao, fala com McCanns’, which our Portuguese friends say translates as ‘No, speak to the McCanns’.
On the Thursday evening, my son and I went to a fund-raising dinner at Frei Antonio, a restaurant in Mafra (approx 30 miles from Lisbon).. We were warmly welcomed, and one woman we met there told us about her demonstration outside the court. She had handed out red carnations which have come to symbolise a peaceful revolution in Portugal’s history. She had offered a symbolic flower to a VIP who had refused to take it. When asked why, he had replied: ‘I don’t believe in it’. She asked, ‘What don’t you believe in, peaceful revolution or free speech?’
“This Police Inspector, on a matter of principle, had found it necessary to leave the job he loved – incurring loss of income and substantial loss of pension rights – in order to write his first book, ‘Maddie: The Truth About a Lie’. It dealt with the evidence he uncovered as senior detective in the Madeleine McCann case.
“We reluctantly had to leave our new-found friends as the taxi was waiting. Snr Amaral shook my hand warmly and agreed to be photographed with us. I was left with a profound impression of a man with a depth of character who was gentle, thoughtful and warm. Several people had spoken that evening to warm applause, thus showing their unshakeable admiration for his courage. The McCanns’ libel action against him continues in February, but my fear is that decisions have already been made. I hope and pray that I am proved wrong and that Portugal’s constitution prevails!”
“That evening I purchased Snr Amaral’s second book, just published, entitled: ‘A Mordaca Inglesa – a historia de um livro proibido” (The English Gag – the story of a banned book). It’s an account of the banning of his first book and the attempt by the British government, as he sees it, to silence a Portuguese citizen.

6. Book by Stephen Marsden: ‘Faked Abduction’
[size=9]It has been reported that our former webmaster, Mr Steve Marsden, is to publish a book on the Madeleine McCann case called ‘Faked Abduction’. Whilst we may well agree with much of its contents, we cannot recommend this book to the public. From what we have learned, Mr Marsden is intending to reproduce the contents of Snr Amaral’s book without the permission of him or his publishers. Moreover, we understand that he is making use of a translation of the book into English by a lady called ‘Anna’, once again without her permission. We cannot possibly support a book which, from our understanding, is guilty of a double plagiarism. Furthermore, unlike The Madeleine Foundation books which are priced only to cover costs, we understand that Mr Marsden intends to profit from the sale of his book.

It is quite incredible that this man should flout the law in the way he does. I really do hope the powers-that-be are aware that this is happening and will take action.

He also brazenly points out on his site that, although he may not make allegations against the McCanns, nobody else is prevented from doing so. Surely inciting people to libel under these circumstances must be an offence of some sort? It is certainly breaking the spirit of his agreement to abide by CR's terms rather than face charges.

He must surely face libel charges soon?
