Information to the media

December 8, 2009

Bar ABSOLVED Marcos Aragão Correia of participations of Gonçalo Amaral

Marcos Aragão Correia, Attorney of Maria Leonor Domingos Cipriano, hereby informs the media that the Portuguese Bar Association, through its competent organ for this purpose - the Madeira Council of Ethics, notified him yesterday that all disciplinary proceedings against him were dismissed and shelved.

There were at least three of these processes, namely:

- Inquiry process in order to determine whether the Attorney Marcos Aragão Correia had violated the secrecy that is required when making public reports of its constituents Ana Sofia Brás, José Araújo for crimes committed against them by Gonçalo de Sousa Amaral;

- Disciplinary proceedings brought by another convicted, accusing Marcos Aragão Correia of illegally having refused to continue being his advocate, after him [Aragão Correia] having discovered that that convicted wanted to be supported in an immoral and illegal cause;

- Disciplinary proceedings brought by Gonçalo de Sousa Amaral, through its representative Dr. António Cabrita, accusing the lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia of the practice of various unlawful acts in defense of Leonor Cipriano.

After holding a public hearing, the Portuguese Bar Association unanimously agreed that in no situation Lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia had committed any illegality or irregularity, and therefore rejected all pending disciplinary proceedings, ordering them to be closed.

It should be noted that this decision was unanimous, with all five members that constitute the Madeira Council of Ethics agreeing entirely with it, and so accordingly decided on 12th of November this year, being Marcos Aragão Correia notified of such ruling yesterday, December 7, 2009.

Marcos Aragão Correia expresses its satisfaction for fact that justice has been served in this case, so that he may continue defending the mother of Joana Cipriano without these slanderous suspicion hunging over him, almost all of them created and circulated by convicted Gonçalo de Sousa Amaral with the sole purpose of slandering and harming the current Lawyer of Leonor Cipriano.

Marcos Aragão Correia also said that will be attentive to the new defamatory book of the offender Gonçalo de Sousa Amaral, and that all attempts of the same convict to continue slandering and defaming his constituent Leonor Cipriano, her daughter, Joana Cipriano, the child's stepfather and / or the legitimate representative of this family, will, as has happened so far, be subject of criminal proceedings, which will follow its due diligence procedures, the same way as the other processes that have been filed against the same offender.

The supreme interests of Joana Isabel Cipriano Guerreiro will always be the motive of all our actions.

Along these lines, and under the Appeal Review for the mother of Joana, his lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia also informed that, in order to avoid further unnecessary slanderous suspicions by the enemies of innocent missing children, will not attend the hearing of Leonor Cipriano next Wednesday 9 days (14 hours) to be held at Court of Sentences Execution of Évora, thus avoiding the slander that his presence could strongly influence his Constituent's report. Thus, as it is not mandatory presence of a lawyer, the mother of Joana will be by herself when responding to all questions of Dra Judge of Executive Sentencing Court of Evora on the disappearance of her daughter Joana.

Attached to this release is the scanned version of the Portuguese Bar Association resolution, and Marcos Aragão Correia is calling to the journalists to widely dissseminate its contents, given the extremely negative impact that represented the wide dissemination of his preventive suspension while practicing on the 22nd of January of this year, based on the same main libelous disciplinary proceedings brought by convicted Gonçalo de Sousa Amaral.

I believe this ruling is hugely significant, it shows that judiciary in Portugal and most likely the Portuguese government too, are aware of Goncalo Amaral. They are beginning to realise that it is not Madeleine or her parents that have damaged Portugal's reputation, it is in fact Goncalo Amaral and if he is not stopped, then the damage is going to be permanent.

It is obvious why Goncalo Amaral brought these ridiculous actions, it was because in Marcos he detected that rare person in Portugal, someone who was not afraid of him (Amaral) and not afraid to speak the truth.

I am so thankful that Leonor Cipriano has Dr Marcos Aragao Correia as her counsel, Leonor needed someone unafraid of Goncalo Amaral to help her achieve justice, because the sobering thought it this, there can be no justice for Joana while her mother is in prison for something, it looks very much like she did not do.

Marcos cannot rest until justice is done for Leonor and through that justice is done for Joana and neither can I, and neither can the majority of people who post here. We have all read the what was presented as evidence in Leonor's original trials and we have all recoiled in horror at what seems to us, the total injustice of what was allowed to pass as evidence to convict two people.

Marcos has been aggressed while sitting in his car in a public street, where he had every right to be. Thugs came from the 50th birthday bash of Goncalo Amaral and actually grabbed him through the open car window.

Apparently, Goncalo Amaral took offense to Marcos, Ana and Jose, watching his firework party from the public street and sent out his ~~paid thugs~~ friends to aggress them and cause a problem in the street. Had Goncalo Amaral not sent out his ~~paid~~ ~~thugs~~ friends, then it is very, very doubtful that any altercation would have taken part at all. It is also worth remembering here that it was not Amaral that reported this to the police, but it was Marcos, Ana and Jose, if Amaral was innocent and somehow the presence of these three from the street, one sitting in his car and two just standing there smoking and talking by the car was upsetting Amaral's firework party, why didn't he report it to the police?

Everything is beginning to implode in Amaral's life, everything he has done wrong is beginning to catch up with him.
With this in mind, shouldn't someone be looking into the previous years of Amaral's life, like how he managed to survive on his and his wife' salaries, enough to buy a house with land a swimming pool and the upkeep of such a property, dating back to 2002? Because something is not right there, even in credit crazy times, I do not believe that anyone would have officially loaned him that kind of money against his salary, even the combined salaries would never have been anywhere near the requirements for that.

Someone has to look into these things, this is not libel, it is not xenophobia, it is just plain common sense, because something is not adding up there.

Money was made out of the disappearance of poor little Joana Cipriano, money from a book written by Pierre Paulo Cristovao, a man who went on to be charged with the torture of her mother. A torture which took place and was proven n a court of law, yet Cristovao got away with it because he refused to speak! Amaral was the police chief in that case too.

Let's put this into perspective, Paulo Cristovao, was accused of torturing Leonor Cipriano, the torture proved, but not the torturers, yet this man Cristovao, was allowed to write a book and profit from this case, while he was an arguido, accused of torturing the main witness.

Goncalo Amaral in charge, actually allowed Cristovao to write this book, KNOWING that Leonor was tortured, so he knew and said nothing and allowed him to cash in on an innocent child and her mother.

This I find absolutely chilling.

Then came Madeleine. Many experts believe that Madeleine's abduction was a planned event and Amaral was in charge, Amaral who was half a million euros in debt and had creditors breathing down his neck. What to do? How could he make some money to rectify his terrible financial position?

Madeleine was abducted
Amaral was contacted
Amaral did NOT attend the scene
Amaral stayed in the bar drinking with friends
While all hell was breaking loose on his patch, Amaral preferred to stay with his "friends"!
The "Golden Hours" were lost
The crime scene was not secured until THREE MONTHS later
Vital evidence lost of compromised
No DNA samples were taken
The airport and borders and sea ports were NOT informed
No road blocks, all roads out of Praia da Luz were open to kidnappers to escape.
When Amaral eventually got round to closing the roads, the GNR sat in the car and allowed vehicles to pass unchecked, because it was raining!
No Incident room at the complex was set up, in order to talk to staff and holiday makers.
Witness statements were NOT taken until the next day
Vital witnesses were allowed to leave and return home and have still not been contacted
Staff at the holiday complex were allowed to leave and were not spoken to until days and weeks and sometimes months later!
No search of all the vacant properties in the complex were ever carried out
No DNA samples were taken from any of the guests or the staff
Cleaners at the complex were allowed to go in and clean the room and remove Madeleine's bed linen, thus destroying further, vital evidence, which may have been left by the abductors.
A couple of weeks later, Amaral took the decision to allow apartment 5a to be rented out again and it was occupied by five different families of holidaymakers in that time.
Vital witness statements giving leads were NOT followed up.
Efit descriptions were given and the results NOT released.
In the first few days of the investigation, no photographs of Madeleine were issued to the GNR by Amaral, this had people searching for a child they had never even see. (How could they recognise her, even if they did see her?)
Amaral invoked a strict secrecy order on Madeleine's case, a secrecy order that Amaral did NOT have to invoke.
Amaral not keeping his own secrecy order.
Lies and leaks to the Portuguese press, often bizarre and macabre theories about Madeleine's disappearance
The blackening of the main witnesses characters.
No press conference was called and the McCanns were left to their own devices to make decisions about who to talk to and what to say.
No properly organised searches were carried out, the result being that some places were searched repeatedly, while other places were NOT searched at all.
The surrounding properties of the complex were NEVER searched.
NO finger tip searches outside the apartment or in the car park, or beneath the window where Madeleine was said to have been passed through, were ever carried out.
No fingertip searches were carried out along the route that abductor was said to have taken.
The forensics team that eventually went to harvest samples from the apartment, were not dressed correctly
Fingerprints were taken by a woman, who was not in a SOC suit, whose hair was blowing in the wind and her right hand was NOT gloved.
Goncalo Amaral made the McCanns arguidos on information he did NOT have.
He made them arguidos just before the law changed in Portugal, if he had waited for a further 8 days, he would NOT have been able to make them suspects, as he would have needed evidence to do so, this is evidence he did NOT have.
Bringing sniffer digs in THREE MONTHS after Madeleine's abduction.
The flawed and highly compromised way the tests were carried out
GNR driving suspects cars in their own clothes NOT wearing overalls or overshoes.
The dog handler forcing the dogs to indicate at the car.
The dog paying more attention to a brick wall and air vent between the cars
The dog having to be forced back the McCann car six times before indicating
The cadaver dog NEVER being placed inside the car
Clothes that were meant to be contaminated were packed in the same boxes as other clothes
The moving around of evidence (cuddle cat) from one situation to another before they got the dog to indicate.
Goncalo Amaral NEVER even speaking to the main witnesses of a case he was in charge of investigating.

This is just from memory, every single mistake that could be made, was made from the outset.

How could a supposedly experienced police detective be in charge of a case like this and make every single mistake that there was to make?

Put this together with everything else and a very serious and very sinister pattern begins to emerge.
