Revelations of WikiLeaks not enough to reopen proceedingsby Ruth COELHO Today
PGR devalues telegram saying that British police had evidence against the McCanns.
The telegram from the U.S. American embassy allusive to Maddie process and revealed by WikiLeaks "shows how this case had political intervention and became political," which "should be sufficient for prosecutors to reopen the criminal proceeding," according to Gonçalo Amaral, former PJ coordinator who led the investigation into the disappearance of British child in the early months. But the Attorney General's Office (PGR) has already announced that it will not reopen the investigation.
The telegram is dated September 21, 2007, two weeks after Kate and Gerry were made suspects in Portugal. It was released on Monday by the newspaper El Pais by WikiLeaks site, refers to information given to the U.S. ambassador in Lisbon All Hoffman by British Ambassador Alexander Ellis, who was the British police who discovered evidence against parents Madeleine McCann.
For the attorney general's office, Pinto Monteiro, this information is not important enough to reopen the case. In a memo sent yesterday to the press, the PGR has not identified "new, credible and relevant" facts to reopen the investigation related to Madeleine McCann, the British child disappeared in Algarve in 2007.
Gonçalo Amaral sees the revelation of the telegram by WikiLeaks from another standpoint: "The meeting between the ambassadors the U.S. and UK is in itself new data. What is also new is that it demonstrates that the Judicial Police, which had been questioned, was on track. "
The former coordinator of the PJ says, "The couple themselves have said over the years, that there are reasons to reopen the matter." At this point, the lawyer for the McCanns, Rogerio Alves, stresses that Gerry and Kate have a great desire that the process of the disappearance of her daughter to be reopened because it would mean the continuation of the search to find Madeleine. "
Already Gonçalo Amaral would like to see the process reopened so that the parents are held accountable. "The McCanns want us to be convinced that they are looking their daughter, when they are doing is dealing with their image. The work of detectives hired prove that this is all a lie on their part. Why lie? It was interesting to know, "said the former coordinator of the PJ. A spokesman for the McCanns, Clarence Mitchell, played down the diplomatic telegram released by WikiLeaks, considering it a "historical note completely."

Re: Leaks and written media
You make me want to puke. Know this GA: if or when the process will be reopened, it will be based on the work of those who really cares about this child, a child you betrayed all in the name of what we know.
There is only one person who should be held accountable: you GA.
You were the only one who tried to convince that you were looking for this child (which you never did).
What you have done, while you were in charge of the investigation (which for me was no investigation, you only investigate beers and shrimps, with despicable theories written in a book of lies), was a bunch of lies.
You were the only one who were dealing with your image, which was your only purpose.

English press "surrenders" to the version that implicates McCann
Today
It was the Guardian newspaper who revealed the diplomatic telegram via the Web site WikiLeaks. The title of the newspaper was: "WikiLeaks Telegrams: British police found evidence against the McCanns.
The Guardian noted that the McCanns have always maintained that "there was no evidence to implicate them in the disappearance of Madeleine, " and that disclosure of the diplomatic telegram exchanged between the two ambassadors has now come "to change the general perception at the time where it seemed that the Portuguese police were "forcing "the suspicions about the McCanns. "In the same line followed the highlights of the newspapers The Times, The Telegraph and The Sun, showing a shift in perception regarding the image of the McCanns. On the site of British television Sky News, the article by Jason Farrell: "It was well known at the time that British police helped in the investigation. We have provided the dog with the corpse smell to sniff out the apartment. Our forensic laboratories have provided the evidence that led to arrests and speculation. "The McCann won 550,000 pounds in damages from a newspaper group, The Express (Daily Express and Daily Star), which published reports to suggest their involvement in their daughter's disappearance

Re: Leaks and written media
I'm currently ill, too ill, to be able of determining if a piece of news should or should not be put here. I still think it should. It is OUR responsibility to comment on it, spread the truth over and over again, fight for what we believe, we know, to be the truth. So I translated these two pieces.
I wrote something this morning in a mail to someone. I'll repeat it here, that's the only contribution that I can give at the moment.
' Re wikileaks, first I think it is serious, very serious, what Ellis said, the way he said it, IF he said it. Second, it is only natural that GA and his cohorts from all sides jump of joy and the media will give them cover: leaks are just the type of thing portuguese loooove (not very patriotic but true). Third: regarding another cable, this time re a bank and its alledged spying on Iran in exchange for authorization to operate there, it has already been vehemently denied by the bank president, the government, the Bank of Portugal. Fourth, the Attorney General already came public saying that he did not find any indices of crimes, so he saw no reason to open/reopen any processes. And finally, it seems that the guy with a wild imagination here is the american ambassador. IMHO.'

There are no facts "new, credible and relevant" to reopen the McCann case
Updated at 19:39 yesterday. Lusa

The Attorney General's Office (PGR) considers that there are no facts "new, credible and relevant" to reopen the investigation related to Madeleine McCann, the British child disappeared in the Algarve in 2007.
In a reply sent to the agency Lusa, the PGR notes that "it has repeatedly stated that the investigation may be reopened if new facts come to light, credible and relevant." But "so far only opinions, theories in the abstract, ramblings, reasoning and unfounded publicity maneuver, which is not enough to reopen the investigation came to light," reads the note.
A telegram from the U.S. embassy in London, dated September 2007 and released on Monday, refers the disappearance of British child in May of that year, noting it was the British police who had gathered evidence against the parents.
The document, released by the Spanish newspaper El Pais that received it from the ownerts of the Wikileaks site refers to a meeting of the American and the British ambassadors in Lisbon held on September 21, 2007.
Among several other issues, including Russia and Zimbabwe, the diplomats discussed the disappearance of Madeleine McCann at a time when there was great media attention on the subject.
"No further details of the case Ellis [British Ambassador] admitted that British police had developed the current evidence against McCann parents, noting that the authorities of both countries [Portugal and the United Kingdom] were cooperating," writes the U.S. ambassador American in the telegram.
The British diplomat also admitted to the U.S. diplomat that the media attention was expected and "acceptable" insofar that "the government officials keep their comments behind closed doors."
The spokesman for the girl's parents have already devalued the reference of the then British ambassador to Portugal that had been the British police to find evidence against the couple, considering it a "historical footnote completely" out of date.
Clarence Mitchell told the Lusa news agency that "this is quite a historical note that has more than three years" and must be read taking into account the context in which it occurred.
Madeleine McCann disappeared a few days before making four years from the room where he was sleeping with her twin brothers, younger, in an apartment in a resort in Praia da Luz
Parents Kate and Gerry McCann, dined at that time with a group of English friends in a restaurant about 50 meters from the apartment.
In July 2007 the couple was constituted arguidos by the Portuguese authorities and a year after prosecutors announced the filing of the suspicions against the child's parents and a third suspect, Robert Murat.

Re: Leaks and written media
Thank you Maria for taking the time to translate those 2 articles, I'm sorry to hear you are not well, I too am not very well at the moment.
Not too sure why our Ambassador would be discussing this case with the US Ambassador, but anyway, we all know the British Police were working with the PJ and I would fully expect the BP to do their job and investigate Kate and Gerry thoroughly. If they had "developed" (surely this should be gathered ?) any evidence then I would assume that evidence would exist in the files. It doesn't!
Judging by the AG statement today, I think he was already aware of this "3 year old" cable which is why he was quick to make it clear that in the 3 years since nothing has changed to reopen the case.
Back to bed for me, lol.

If this is what was recorded in the cable, then the two ambassadors were not really discussing the case.
As for why they were discussing the case, the two ambassadors most likely get together regularly and discuss many things. We have no idea (and I cannot be bothered looking through the wikileaks stuff as most of it is inane drivel) how many other cables the US Ambassador sent and what they were about. It is clear from our own wikileaks revelations that senior govt ministers regularly met with US officials and that reports of these meetings were sent to Washington.
The Portuguese Attorney General has got it right, this leak is nothing new, it is not evidence, and has no bearing on anything. It is dipomatic gossip, nothing more. And once again, look at the timing of the cable, it was two weeks after the McCanns were made arguido, and long before the true nature of the so called evidence was made public. The UK Ambassador may not even have been aware of the lack of evidence at this point hence the generalised 'co-operating' comment.
