Try to imagine...

Police lacked any evidence

Try to imagine something as traumatic and horrific as your three-year-old daughter disappearing from your holiday apartment without trace. Try to imagine how you might feel as you spend day after desperate day appealing for information and assistance in the hope of finding her but to no avail.
Now imagine that the police officers who are responsible for investigating her disappearance decide that you were in some way responsible.
They conclude that your daughter died in your holiday apartment and that you faked her abduction.
They make you official suspects in the case.
Surely they would need some very strong evidence to make such a serious accusation wouldn't they?
It would be unthinkable that they would blame you without a compelling reason.
They surely would not, for instance, rely upon something as flimsy as a police dog which detected the "scent of death" in your apartment as a basis for their damning theory, or a dream that one of you had experienced in which you had seen your daughter lying on a hillside.
That would be ridiculous wouldn't it?
And yet this is exactly what the Portuguese police apparently did over the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
Portuguese officers have confirmed as much in a Lisbon court room this week in a hearing about a book written by a former senior officer.
Incredible, isn't it?
Or perhaps a better word would be shameful.
