The Madeleine McCann case

British police will hear 38 people about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann
British police announced on Thursday that identified 38 people who want to listen to in the investigation into the disappearance in Portugal in 2007, the little Madeleine McCann, three years, a case that has captured the curiosity of the public opinion throughout the world.

"Our investigatin has advanced to the point where we have identified 38 people who we want to hear. These people are from various European countries. At this time, we are at an advanced stage in discussions with each of the countries," said Scotland Yard in a statement.

"Twelve of these are British subjects who might be, we believe, in Portugal at the time Madeleine disappeared", it can be read, in a statement.

"We continue to believe that there is a possibility of Madeleine being alive," said Chief Inspector Andy Redwood.

The UK has decided to organize his own investigation, from the time the inquiry over the Portuguese police was given as completed in July 2008.

Little Madeleine vanished in May 2007 the apartment of Praia da Luz where she was on holiday with the family. The parents, who were dining at a restaurant near the apartment, believe the child was abducted.

This disappearance has raised the interest of the media from around the world and gave rise to a vast international survey.

Investigators from Scotland Yard broadcast last April, a photo of the girl, aged via computer, in order to provide a picture of how Maddie might be nine years old.

New leads and new witnesses in the Madeleine McCannn case

British police believe Madeleine may still be alive. And took a step forward in review that justifies the passage to the investigation stage.

The Metropolitan Police said they will investigate 38 "persons of interest" in the case of the disappearance of young British girl Madeleine McCann, after reviewing clues from the UK, Portugal and seven companies of private investigators.

The case file has more than 30 000 documents, which were to be read "in detail" by agents with apparent success. "The actions we completed generate new leads and new witnesses", revealed in a statement released today.

The Metropolitan Police, which says "believe Madeleine may still be alive," was in Portugal dozens of times, in which he met with the Judicial Police, with whom "the relationship is positive" and thank those who "collaboration".

The British authorities reveal that 38 persons of interest come from various European countries, specifying that only 12 of them are citizens of the UK who would be in the Algarve at the height of the disappearance of the daughter of Kate and Gerry McCann.

"We and the Portuguese authorities remain fully focused"

"We and the Portuguese authorities remain fully focused on finding out what happened to Madeleine and everything we do is to think in the best interest of her," said the Chief Inspector Andy Redwood. "We continue to believe that there is a possibility of Madeleine being alive."

"We are always in contact with Kate and Gerry McCann and they are always informed of new developments," he concluded.

Madeleine McCann disappeared on the evening of May 3, 2007 in an apartment in Praia da Luz in the Algarve, where he had been left alone with her two brothers by parents.

British police wants to question Portuguese about the disappearance of Madeleine McCann

British police said today it opened an investigation into the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann in Portugal and identified 38 "persons of interest" to be heard across Europe, including Portugal.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police, who initiated a review of the case last year, told Lusa today that "there are Portuguese and British" among the 38 people identified as "of interest" for the investigators.

Of these, 12 are British and the remaining five are from different countries, including Portugal, the same source said, saying that for now, will not be given further details.

A statement issued by Scotland Yard says that is "an advanced state" dialog with the respective authorities of the persons concerned for information.

Read also that those responsible for the investigation, entitled "Operation Grange," asked "formally" to the Crown Prosecution [much like the British prosecutors but in Portuguese] to submit one International Rogatory to the Portuguese authorities to ask for help in obtaining statements concerning lines of inquiry they wish to follow.

"This was done with the full support of the British Government," the statement added.

To carry out the investigation, the British Metropolitan Police wants to have a "small number" of agents in Portugal, within the practice of mutual assistance.

The British press had advanced several weeks ago the hypothesis Scotland Yard opened its own investigation into the case, following the review opened in 2011 by intervention of the Prime Minister, David Cameron.

At the time, police confirmed that a delegation of senior officials of the Crown Prosecution and detectives visited Portugal in mid-April to discuss the next steps with the Portuguese authorities.

Madeleine McCann disappeared a few days before to four years, May 3, 2007, the room where she was sleeping with her two twin brothers, younger, in an apartment of a tourist resort in Praia da Luz in the Algarve.

Parents and another British Robert Murat, were made arguidos by the Portuguese authorities in July 2007, but the July 21, 2008, the Attorney General's Office determined the filing of suspicion, which spelled the end of the investigations.

Parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, holds a campaign for years to find the child and publicly advocate the reopening of the process.

Last year a team was established at Scotland Yard to review the case at the request of Prime Minister David Cameron, whose work analysis of more than 40,000 runs and document cost, according to local media, more than two million pounds (2.34 million euros).

British police opens own investigation on Madeleine McCann case

Gerry and Kate McCann feel that this is "a big step forward." In Portugal, the investigation remains closed

The British authorities decided on Thursday to open a formal investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in Praia da Luz, Algarve, May 3, 2007. In Portugal, the authorities understand that the new facts do not justify the reopening of the case.

According to sources of the British police, the two years of analysis of the case that was filed in Portugal showed that there are new leads and new witnesses to investigate. The team, which was always in collaboration with national authorities, found "38 persons of interest" to be interviewed. Twelve of these people are British citizens who were in Portugal at the time of the disappearance.

In Portugal, the Judicial Police stated that in the view of the Portuguese authorities, there is not enough relevant evidence to allow the reopening of the investigation'. Despite the new facts, the same source explains that "national authorities are not constrained" by an inquiry in the UK that meets the assumptions of the criminal law in Britain.

The teams that analyzed the case in England in the last two years moved to Portugal 16 times, having maintained contacts with the Judicial Police and other authorities. The collaboration between the British authorities and national will continue to progress as far and any action of the British police in Portugal will occur upon the assumptions of the "law of international judicial cooperation in criminal matters'.

"Our relationship has been positive and we are grateful for the cooperation so far," writes the British police.

The statement from the British police also said they are now being made efforts to interrogations occurring citizens of other member states. In Portugal, the authorities need not for nationals in the list of suspects.

Gerry and Kate McCann feel that this is "a big step forward."

British police took the case when the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, in 2011, responded to the call of the parents of the missing girl.

"A review of the case brought us a new way of thinking, new theories, new evidence and new witnesses" confirmed Inspector Andy Redwood.

In a statement published on its website, British police said that the process is 'complex' and had translation problems with more than 30,000 documents sent from Portugal.

"We continue to believe that Madeleine may still be alive," says the same note.

it's becoming so much clearer now how utterly inadequate the Portugese Police were, are, in really getting to the heart of this tragedy. Inadequate due to lack of resolve, lack of funding, lack of political will, apathy, corruption at the highest level and pure self interest. It was so obvious from the very beginning that the trail led to international crime.
Worst of all they showed no inclination to open their doors to the outside influence and assistance from the UK or any other European organisation that they so desperately needed. Pride. How this once mighty nation has fallen.

Im so glad that things are moving along.

And Rosemary, yes, the situation in Portugal as far as the justice system goes is pitiful.  For my part, I think that incompetence plays a large part, as it allows the corrupt to flourish.  So although I think the vast majority of the PJ and the entire justice system are not corrupt, the level of incompetence is far too high.  The result is injustice for many, and many guilty getting away with their crimes.

Other things like underfunding play and political interference play into this as well.

Hi Dianeh  Good to see you here too again.

I agree with a lot of what you say about the PJ but I also know from living in Spain and now in the Canaries that corruption in Iberia and in Portugal is an accepted way of life.  It is the norm here Dianeh.  No shame attached to it.  No moralising.  Just a shrug of the shoulders, a blind eye and an acceptance of the attitude that if 'one doesn't help oneself then God won't help'.  When this outlook has become so ingrained in the political and social climate of a country it takes generations and a complete economic breakdown (which is what is happening right now) for it to shift.  And it could also well be argued that this kind of acceptance of corruption could be the basis of the social malaise that leads to apathy and incompetence. Not the other way around in fact.
On a more hopeful note.let's look forward to some arrests soon!!
