Missing six-year-old found in AmsterdamAAP
September 9, 2010, 9:00 am 21 Comments

Almost three years after his son went missing, former NSW deputy fire chief Ken Thompson has learned the six-year-old boy is in Amsterdam.

Andrew Thompson was abducted by his mother, Melinda Stratton, on April 24, 2008.

The Australian Federal Police issued a warrant for Ms Stratton's arrest and Interpol managed to trace her to Frankfurt in Germany.

Leads then went cold, however, so Mr Thompson took early retirement to look for his son himself.

Following a massive campaign including a website with information about his son, and a 6500km cycle through Europe, Andrew has been found.

"I didn't know where in Europe he might be," Mr Thompson told Macquarie Radio from Amsterdam on Thursday morning, having just arrived in the city.

"I just knew Europe was the most likely place, so I decided I would do whatever I could do to raise public awareness to Andrew, and to some other kids who are missing in Europe as well, by riding a bicycle and just trying to generate as much media interest as I could in Andrew."

Fairfax reported on Thursday that a school principal in northern Europe became suspicious after noticing Andrew's passport had expired, following an attempt to enrol him at the school.

"I'm not quite sure what alerted the suspicion but the person then went on the internet and decided (to) do a search for missing children in Australia," Mr Thompson told Macquarie Radio.

"She very quickly came across the internet site for Andrew that we promoted and then she saw the scale of the effort that was put into finding Andrew, and contacted the police.

"I think things happened very quickly after that."

Mr Thompson believes Ms Stratton has been taken into police custody and that Andrew is with a foster family.

"He is safe. We'll hopefully now get him back to Australia and then Melinda and I can resume the process that needs to be resumed, that was started in 2008," he said.

Here is the website.

There were fears for this little boy because his mother was not considered stable.

And happy happy news, he has been found. It was a vigilant school principal who thought something was wrong with his passport, so googled him. So he was found, out of the blue.

I am so happy for Andrew and his Dad, that they are now to be reunited.

The encouraging thing about Andrew being found it how it happened. It came out of the blue, due to a vigilant school principal, and Andrew's high profile on the internet.

This does give hope to other parents of missing children, such as Kate and Gerry.

Andrew and his father have been reunited and it went quite well.

Aussie dad reunites with long-lost son

Beaming Australian father Ken Thompson has finally been reunited with his six-year-old son Andrew in Amsterdam following a two-and-a-half-year search.

The former NSW deputy fire chief met with his son for an emotional 40-minute reunion on Monday in the Dutch city.

It was the first time Mr Thompson had seen his son since April 2008, when the boy was taken to Europe by his mother, Melinda Stratton.

The overjoyed father knew immediately it was Andrew.

"I thought, `It's him, my boy, my Andrew'," he told News Limited newspapers.

"He's got some sort of accent now, but he still speaks perfect English and he's got a strong little personality.

"It's my Andrew."

Mr Thompson quit his job to cycle 6500km across Europe searching for his son and publicising his disappearance.

Andrew, who is now in a Dutch childcare institution, came to the attention of Amsterdam police on September 5 after a tip-off from a family friend.

Ms Stratton was arrested the following day.

A team of Dutch psychologists prepared father and son for their emotional meeting and the 57-year-old said it was a nerve-racking wait to see Andrew.

"He was nervous, too, but he looked at me and gave a little smile straight away," Mr Thompson said.

"After all this time, I didn't know how he would react and what his mother has told him about me.

"So it could have been pretty bad. But it was fantastic."

The pair met in a small room filled with toys, and the two rekindled their relationship as they played together.

"He walked towards me and got close, then veered off and got some toys and asked me to play with him," Mr Thompson said.

"We sat there playing a board game puzzle, and he slowly opened up a little as we played.

"I let him take control, and he really took the lead in how we spoke and what we spoke about."

Andrew didn't ask any questions about his former life in Australia or why he had not seen his father since he was three-and-a-half.

"I still don't feel like a dad, I'm a father but now I want to learn again to be a dad, to do the things that dads do."

Mr Thompson is waiting for Dutch childcare experts and psychologists to organise further meetings with Andrew.

The experts are taking a cautious approach because of the upheaval Andrew has endured in the past fortnight.

It is understood it could take months before Andrew is allowed to return to Australia with his father.

It is so heartwarming to read about this. I have been following Ken for quite some time, hoping he would find his son. Miracles do happen.
