Austria Cellar Girl Wakes From Coma

A teenage daughter of Austrian cellar rapist Josef Fritzl has woken from a coma and left hospital.

Incest rapist Josef Fritzl Kerstin, 19, was unconscious and critically ill when admitted on April 19 and placed on a life support machine.

She was placed in a medically-induced coma and has now been successfully revived.

Klaus Schwertner, spokesman for the hospital in Amstetten, said Kerstin still needs medical and therapeutic care.

Doctors said last month that they would start waking her up from her coma.

The teenager was the eldest of seven children fathered by Fritzl, 73, and his daughter Elisabeth, who was imprisoned in a dungeon underneath the family home in the town for 24 years.

Kerstin had spent her entire life in the windowless cellar with her mum, now aged 42, and two brothers.

Three of her other siblings lived "normal" lives as Fritzl's "grandchildren" while another child died shortly after birth.

Kerstin's admission to hospital lifted the lid on the "House of Horrors" abuse scandal.

Her mother and siblings are currently staying at a nearby psychiatric clinic.

Fritzl, who remains in custody pending charges, had confessed to the abuse, police said.

Dungeon daughter wakes from coma
The daughter of Austrian dungeon father Josef Fritzl - whose admission to hospital exposed the scandal - has woken from her coma, doctors have said.

Kerstin Fritzl, 19, is one of seven children Fritzl fathered by raping his daughter Elisabeth, 42, whom he kept imprisoned for 24 years in rooms under his home.

A hospital statement said Kerstin had been awakened from a medically-induced coma and released from the intensive care unit where she was taken on April 19.

Medical reports last month gave Kerstin little chance of survival saying she was critically ill, although no details of what she was suffering from were released.

Fritzl's dark secrets were revealed after Kerstin became ill and he was forced to take her for hospital treatment.

It emerged he had imprisoned Elisabeth in the specially-built dungeon under his home in the town of Amstetten as a teenager, then repeatedly raped her.

She had seven children, one died in infancy, three were brought up in Fritzl's house and three kept in the dungeon with their mother.
