Yes, unfortunatelly I do believe he stands a chance. He has an indefatigable friend already at a City Hall, Moita Flores in Santarém who is now openly accusing the McCanns of manipulating the Cipriano case. Moita Flores is also a former PJ, never caught in the act but owner of a small fortune no one knows where it came from. He is also a crime fiction writer. And PSD supported (social democratic party, currently in the opposition).

He has brains allright. But the difference is that 'our' Madeleine case is not 'his' Madeleine case. We are worried about a little girl and want to find her. It never was his objective.

The President of the Social Democratic Party is currently giving an interview on RTP1 and has been asked about her support to several figures as PSD candidates to forthcoming local elections. She fiercely defended her position about the candidate for Lisbon, a most amasing former prime-minister, current MP and former president of Lisbon City hall. Asked about Gonçalo Amaral, if she was going to support his pretensions to be candidate at Olhão, she answered that this was a completely different case, as the only thing until now was the proposal of the local organisation, none of the upper organisations had yet endorsed such a suggestion. Furthermore, his candidacy should be turned down by internal electoral comitee as he was very recently linked to justice organisations and there should be no doubt in anybody's mind that there could not be any interference between justice and politics.

I believe I must retract from that assertion.

24horas publishes today (front page) that Gonçalo Amaral is hurt (???!!!) by the president of PSD and is considering going ahead without their support.

We have to consider several details. In recent past, PSD has not supported as candidates for another run, members of some local authorities already in office but who where facing suspicions of corruption or actual trials about any type of problem. What happened in two or three cases (one also happened with PS, the socialists) was that the targetted persons decided to constitute their own list of candidates (independent people and/or own party members) and run for election - and invariably won. Some (or all?) with absolute majority.

Amaral is surely betting on this. But he forgets that these people have been already in office, have work to show their capabilities as heads of local authorities and are well known of the citizens in that area. Local authorities' elections use to be won by 'people' not 'parties'.

On the other hand, he is a very well known person, not in politics, but presented as a 'truth fighter' or a 'anti government knight', and this always goes down well with many people. And he has the press, Correio da Manhã, at his service.

So, if he really tries the candidacy, it seems to me difficult to predict the outcome.

Policy Committee rejected Gonçalo Amaral

The National Policy Committee of the Social Democratic Party decided to reject the nomination of former Inspector of Judicial Police, Gonçalo Amaral, president of the Municipal Council of Olhão.

According to Radio moves Renaissance, which cites an element of the direction of the PSD, the Policy Committee only approved the decision sent by the Coordinating Committee municipal office, which had shown against the name given by the municipality of Olhão the party, even in early January, and subsequently approved by the District Policy Committee.

It is recalled that when the disclosure of a possible application for Olhão by the ex-inpector of PJ, the chairman of the party itself, Manuel Ferreira Leite, was against the possibility of PSD support this candidate, because of its links very close to justice.

Gonçalo Amaral was the coordinator of investigations to the disappearance of British girl Madeleine McCann, Praia da Luz, from the day on May 3, 2007, date of disappearance, up to 2 October.
On 30 June 2008, the investigator left the PJ, to reform and the second said at the time, may exercise his right to freedom of expression and defend the accusations that were targeted in the public square.
