Toddler’s bones found in Sagres
19/3/2011

Human remains that were recently found on Beliche beach, Sagres, are thought to be the bones of a baby girl who was reported missing in July last year, believed to have been murdered by her German father.

A source close to the investigation confirmed to Portuguese news channel tvi24.pt that the remains “are those of the German baby whose murder is being attributed to the father.”

“Given the characteristics and the place” where the body was found, as well as “a few biological traces”, everything points to the remains being those of the missing infant, the source indicated.

However, it was stressed that the authorities would only be sure of the identity after forensic tests.

German national Gunnar Dories, 43, was on holiday in the Algarve last summer with a woman said to be his Angolan mistress, identified as Georgina Zito, 30, and their 21-month-old lovechild Alexandra.

They travelled to the Algarve on 6 July, 2010, and were staying at the Hotel Vila Galé, in Meia Praia, Lagos.

Mrs. Zito’s body was found on Canavial beach, on 10 July, shortly after which Mr. Dories, an engineer who allegedly lived in Germany with another women, was named as a suspect.

The little girl was never found.

Witnesses told authorities that they had seen Mr. Dories dragging a woman into the sea before pulling her motionless body onto the sand and leaving her there.

It is said he was carrying a baby at the time, and told onlookers he was going to “fetch some tablets”, but never came back. It was also reported that hours later he arrived back at the hotel without the child.

Three days later the suspect is known to have driven to Lisbon in a rented vehicle and from there travelled to Germany.

He was arrested on 15 July, 2010, after a European arrest warrant was launched by Portuguese authorities.

He has remained in police custody in Germany since his arrest, though refused to disclose any further information on his daughter’s whereabouts.

Mr. Dories has maintained that the last time he saw the infant she was alive, and told German authorities that he had handed her over to a couple of tourists in the Algarve.

Both German and Portuguese police carried out searches in the areas indicated in the suspect’s statements, though found no leads.

In November last year Germany rejected a request from Portugal to extradite the presumed double murderer.

The source connected to this recent development said that, should the remains be confirmed as those of Alexandra, nothing would change in the process and the man would still be tried in Germany.

This is so unbelieveably sad. It shows too that if Madeleine had died and was concealed I truly believe she would have been found by now.

God bless this little one and her mummy.
