McCanns: We Fear The Hunt For Maddie Is Over
By ANTONELLA LAZZERI
Published: Today
KATE and Gerry McCann fear the three-year hunt for missing daughter Maddie is about to end.
They revealed the Find Madeleine Fund has dwindled from £2million at its peak to £300,000
Their worldwide search for Maddie - aged three when she disappeared on holiday in Portugal in May 2007 - will be wound up because they will no longer be able to pay specialist investigators when the money runs out.
Kate, 42, said: "It will be just me and Gerry left looking for her."
For three and a half years Kate and Gerry have searched tirelessly for Maddie.
Every spare moment has been devoted to the hunt.
But Kate yesterday admitted that for the first time she fears they may never find her.
Within weeks of Maddie being snatched from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, money from the public poured in to boost the Find Madeleine Fund.
At its height it stood at £2million. But now there is just £300,000 left.
Desperate for help, the couple are launching an online petition asking the public to back them and demand the British and Portuguese governments do more to find Madeleine.
And they have sent out "begging letters" to sponsors, including author JK Rowling, tycoon Richard Branson, comic Jack Dee and other high-profile celebrities asking them to contribute to the fund.
They hope the public will be touched by their plight and give too.
Clutching her husband's hand tightly, an emotional Kate admitted: "There is only enough money in the Find Madeleine Fund to keep the hunt going until spring 2011.
"When the money runs out we will not be able to pay the investigators helping us to find Madeleine. It will be just me and Gerry left looking for her.
Search
"I just can't contemplate that. We've had many scares along the way. But this is the first time we are really faced with that happening."
The Portuguese police search for Maddie, aged three when she vanished, was effectively called off after a few weeks.
Since September 2007 Kate and Gerry, both 42 from Rothley, Leics, have been organising the hunt for her themselves. Kate gave up work as a doctor to concentrate on the task.
Gerry, a heart surgeon, admits that at the current rate of expenditure the Find Madeleine Fund has just months before it is
broke.
Explaining how much the search for their daughter costs Gerry said £1 pays for a multi-lingual call centre for an hour, £10 pays for 1,000 posters that are distributed across the world and £50 pays for the running costs of a Portuguese investigation team for two hours.
He said: "Without our investigation team it would be almost impossible.
"If the money does run out there would still be a helpline manned by volunteers, email. But it would be very, very difficult. It would essentially mean that any kind of pro-active search for Madeleine would cease."
Contemplating the situation they face, Gerry begged: "Our little girl is now seven years old, innocent, vulnerable and waiting to be found.
"Please, please help us."
But even if the funds go, and there is no further help from the Portuguese and British governments, the McCanns will carry on their hunt forever.
A strained looking Gerry, shaking his head, said: "No parent would ever give up on their child. And we won't. As a parent you can't. Children who were abducted have been found years later. We believe she is out there, we just have to find her."
Twisting her Find Madeleine wristband Kate agreed, saying: "No parent could stop.
Feared
"If no one apart from us is looking then so be it."
But Kate also quietly admits that there have been times recently when she has feared Maddie might never be found.
Kate bit her lip, and said: "There are more days now of thinking, 'Are we going to find her? How long is this going to go on for. Is this our life now? Forever?' I have to face the fact that we may never find her."
Kate says she also struggles to imagine what Maddie would look like. She said: "I do try and picture her. I still see her best friends. I look at them and think, 'Would she be that tall, that slim. Would she be able to read? To write?'"
Kate also revealed how she still talks to her darling daughter. She said: "I speak to her every day. I always have."
But the agony and anguish remain - as does the hope.
Gerry said: "It's been an incredibly painful experience, it could tear families apart, but we are very much together - focused on finding Madeleine."
You can donate to the search fund at FindMadeleine.com
Twins are giving us the will to battle on
THE McCanns say their five-year-old twins Sean and Amelie give them the strength to face life without Maddie.
Comfort ... the McCanns with their twins
Gerry said: "You can have a bad day and think, 'I can't go on' and then they will say, 'Maddie is missing, we have to find her'.
"They still talk about her constantly. They chat about her coming home, how they are going to share a bedroom, open the big pile of Christmas and birthday presents we've kept for her."
He went on: "The other day we were in the car and there was condensation on the windows and they were writing their names in it.
"Sean said, 'I've written Madeleine's because she's part of our family'.
Best
"We went to their school the other day and Sean was asked how many sisters he had. I thought, 'Oh no'. But he proudly answered 'I've got two'.
"The twins give us the strength and energy to carry on."
But Kate says the pain remains. She explained: "Sean and Amelie are great, they are doing really well. We make the best of it. Life is not normal.
"A friend of mine said she heard a radio interview with a man who had been through a tragedy. He described the pain like a boulder, he said it's not like the boulder gets any lighter, you get stronger.
"I think that's true. It doesn't mean the pain is any less, it doesn't mean that the whole issue is any less important.
"We haven't got our daughter - our family isn't complete."

Interview with Mr. McCann at a Portuguese newspaper
It was 3 years and a half ago that the British Madeleine McCann disappeared from the resort Ocean Club, at Praia da Luz, Algarve. She had three years. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann were investigated, but there was no enough evidences to accuse them. The PJ also never gathered evidences to point abduction. The case was shelved. Several times by year, the child´s parents, which have today 7 years old, promotes actions in the attempt of finding clues that clarifies what happened in that night. This time, launched a petition with the purpose of pressure the Portuguese / British authorities with the way that some lose ends of the process being re-analyzed. The purpose is to find new data which can be relevant and to be able to re-open the process.
The i newspaper talked with Gerry McCann.
Question: The purpose of this petition is to pressure the authorities in a way that the process being re-opened?
Answer: The purpose of this petition is to gather elements of the judicial process being reviewed, re-analyzed and re-evaluated, with the way of identify what has yet to be done, clues that are yet to be followed, conclude what has to be concluded, detect contradictions, evidences not investigated, any small flaw which can makes us follow a new lead.
Question: But, is there so many things yet to be analyzed?
Answer: If the authorities predisposed to re-analyze the process, we are convinced that will be found the jigsaw puzzles missed. And with new leads, or with a better view of the ones existed, would be possible, finally, to make the official re-opening of the process.
Question: But for the re-opening of the process is needed that new relevant data appears. What exactly should have been done, what was not been done, with the way of knowing what happened at the night of May 3 2007?
Answer: We don´t have all the information. We know that there are data that the Leicester and PJ naturally don´t share with us. What should be done to know the truth is an re-evaluation of the information which can result in new leads with allow the re-opening of the process. We need new data, even as a result of some flaw of the investigation, to be able to request the re-opening of the process.
Question: But the process was shelved and there is no new data. Are you at a dead-end?
Answer: Since the process was shelved, and we advance with an investigation team, have appeared successively new informations, many of which as a result of information or procedures not concluded or not worked through the investigation. The stronger leads were shared, as they should be, with Leicester police and PJ, the police have effectively the power of decide if the leads deserves or not being investigated. Until the moment, none of those leads were considered relevant or worthy of attention by PJ, which has not caused the re-opening of the process or deepened the investigation around those leads.
Question: But if the police don´t considered the credible leads, it doesn´t make a lot of sense investigate them.
Answer: The investigation couldn´t closed all doors. So, it has to be re-evaluated. Together or independently, both polices can find new leads, new ways, which leads us indeed to what is our desire: the re-opening of the process.
Question: It may say that this petition launched now is the last resource, a last breath?
Answer: None of that. Until we find her or knowed what might have happened we will not rest. Our hope hasn´t died nor will die. We are a family of five elements and Madeleine is needed. What happened to her has to be discovered, she has to be found. Nothing will stop us, not even the eventual shortness of means.
Question: For several months that the Maddie case is far from the media. Is it for the lack of finantial resources, ideas or to feel without much more ways to follow?
Answer: We don´t expect, because it won´t make any sense, see Madeleine daily or weekly in the press, without any stronger reasons or new information. And always that something new appears the media gave enough space.
Question: But have you done something lately to find clues?
Answer: The least presence at the media don’t mean we´re stopped. Madeleine is very much present in us, in the work we daily develop for everybody knows that is still missing. Those who are with us in our pain, and actively helps us in the search for our daughter, from investigators to friends and supporters, regularly assures the spread the word. And that is why Kate, in peticular, works daily that the image of Madeleine crosses the world, that for everybody knows she has not yet found her way home. Every time that there is something new, like now the petition, or in moments more symbolic – like dates of birthday or disappearance, or homage to other missing children or people disappeared – the media shows a larger expression to our cause. Although, every day there is a long way to be used and in which we look to assure, establishing bridges whether with other families whether with associations or renovating support that more people can have access / spread the word.
Question: Kate dedicates only to this cause? Have not back to work?
Answer: Kate divides her daily routine between Madeleine and all efforts needed to find her, and the twins, with the attention that children needs with their ages.
Question: How do you keep hope alive daily?
Answer: Some days much stronger then others, as you imagine. Mainly we have the conscience to know that everything remains open, everything can happen, everything is possible, like any other similar cases with happy ending, which gives us a lot of hope. We have to find her and we all want is Madeleine back in our arms. By the way, Madeleine´s twins also waits. When they say to us: “When Madeleine returns home…” our hope is enhanced.
Question: In about how many is the fund? Is there any new contributions?
Answer: It arrives contributions, periodically, through raising fund or individual contribution of friends and supporters. Although, the truth is we need to continue, because nowadays, only we are actively looking for Madeleine. That is why we need to prevent the fund to dry.
Question: The recent defeat at Portuguese justice, with the removal of the prohibition of Amaral´s book sales, shattered your confidence?
Answer: Our attention is focused in the search for our daughter. That is where our attention is and we cannot lose from our sight that goal. Not at all. There are lawyers, in which we have all trust, taking care of those problems, which is not yet decided definitely. In all case, what happened here, with three courts trying to protect our fundamental rights, is already a huge encouragement to us, and a serious blow to the credibility of those who continue to accuse us without shame, aiming solely for profit.
Question: Do you believe in the Portuguese authorities?
Answer: Let´s hope that the Portuguese authorities, as well as the British, understands that for us, as for any other parents in our circumstances, it is essential to find our daughter. We are convinced that this request of re-analysis will wake sleeping consciences as for the procedures used in these types of cases to be improved. Our effort and work is also directed to all parents who don´t know about their sons. Although, we need to see open the possibility of the re-evaluation of the elements of the criminal process where the investigation was made. And it is essential that such re-evaluation being done with moral commitment which the object of the process requires, with an open way, without discard any hypothesis, only that attitude will conduct to something new. Above the quality or lack of quality in the investigation of cases of minors disappearances is the moral commitment of not letting to be forgotten an investigation such like this, because Madeleine, as other missing children, continues missing and suffering.
Question: You continue to do your private investigation of the case?
Answer: Of course we continue. Since the case was shelved, that we are really the only ones looking actively for our daughter.

It distressed me too Di, for the first time in a long while I was filled with dread and fear and just couldn't handle it.
But you are damn right they have our support and we will be behind them every step of the way.
