BRITAIN'S top murder cop has been lined up to spearhead a new probe into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, we can reveal.
Det Chief Insp Colin Sutton, 49, who has been involved in some of the UK's biggest inquiries - including the murder of Milly Dowler and the terror reign of the Nightstalker sex beast - is seen as the best man to handle the challenging review.
Senior child protection officer Jim Gamble has asked Scotland Yard to take a fresh look at the three-year investigation.
He blasted Portuguese cops for their handling of the hunt for Maddie - who vanished aged three from her family's Algarve holiday apartment in 2007. Now the Met Police are set to review all leads in the case, using technology and standards expected in a UK homicide or kidnap.
It will delight Maddie's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann. A senior police source said: "They deserve reassurance that everything that can be done has been done."

Let's not forget that there is still a reward available. Surely that should tempt someone to come forward?

THE News of the World has put up a record £1.5 million reward for the safe return of Madeleine McCann. c
Stars and business leaders have donated huge sums in an unprecedented show of support for our Find Maddie campaign - to make up the largest award in newspaper history.
CALL:
PORTUGUESE POLICE - 0035 1282 405 400 0035 1282 405 400
CRIMESTOPPERS - 0044 1883 731 336 0044 1883 731 336
NEWS OF THE WORLD - 0044 207 782 1001 0044 207 782 1001
After we kicked off the fund with £250,000, Harry Potter author JK ROWLING put up a staggering amount - the largest single donation. But she asked us not to reveal the exact figure.
Kind-hearted JK married a Portuguese TV journalist and her first child Jessica was born in Portugal, a few hours' drive from Praia da Luz where Maddie was snatched.
Her dad Gerry said: "We are very happy and pleased with what you are doing. Anything that can be done to publicise that Madeleine is missing and help with the search is very welcome."
Topshop tycoon SIR PHILIP GREEN matched our £250,000 and said: "I hope this makes a difference."
Virgin's SIR RICHARD BRANSON put up £100,000, saying: "I'd like to appeal as a father to whoever is holding her to please bring her home safe."
Everton football club chairman and theatre boss BILL KENWRIGHT was one of the first people to see pictures of Maddie wearing his club's shirt before they were released this week.
Mr Kenwright, who has pledged a huge personal sum, said: "If it helps towards the reunion it will be the best cheque I've ever written."
Footie chairmen EGGERT MAGNUSSON of West Ham and Reading's JOHN MADEJSKI both gave £10,000.
Ann Summers boss JACQUELINE GOLD donated £100,000, explaining she wanted to get involved after meeting Sara Payne.
She said: "I pray that this nightmare comes to an end soon with the safe return of their beautiful little girl."
Telly star SIMON COWELL promised £50,000, saying: "I heard about the terrible situation here in LA and I hope she is found safe and sound."
Manchester United star WAYNE ROONEY and fiancée Coleen McLoughlin pledged £25,000, telling us: "We are praying for Maddie's safe return and for an end to what must be a nightmare for all her family."
The England cricket team joined in with £20,000. Captain MICHAEL VAUGHAN said: "Our thoughts and prayers are for Maddie's safe return."
Entrepreneur SIR TOM HUNTER pledged £100,000 with EasyJet boss SIR STELIOS Haji-Ioannou and Matalan chief JOHN HARGREAVESchipping in with large sums too.
The Mark Warner company, which runs the Ocean Village resort where Maddie was snatched, said: "We wholeheartedly support the News of the World initiative and anything that helps get Madeleine back."
Our reward offer, which appears in several major European languages on the right, is subject to standard News of the World reward offer conditions.

Re: NOTW Top cop spearheads new probe
Hi Iwantthetruth, yes the translated files are on the internet. As far as I know the only translations available have been done by a few people and depending on where you read them, there are some small differences that could be detrimental to the true meaning of specific wording as they were originally intended.
Best to compare anything you are particularaly interested in, between interpretations and make your own mind up, maybe even asking on here to check and ensure balance.
I always have used Pamalams as there is little personal opinion on the site, just files.
http://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/
Also at McCannfiles, but a lot of spin and personal comments added, which I find biases the reader. I am sure you can make your own mind up.

Of course there is here, J4. The original files in Portuguese can be used to confirm answers, as we have a few Portuguese posters here, only constrained by available time.

If this report is true, then it has to be good news, this man is obviously well used to cold cases, so can bring his expertise to the table.
Once again I am aghast at the apparent incompetence of our own police force, if the Portuguese police are to be held accountable, then some on our own police force, especially in Leicestershire, need to be held accountable too. We have to press for an inquiry into their conduct and set a good example to the Portuguese people, that while we may come down hard on their police incompetence and "corruption", we will also come down harder, where we see it in our own police, we have to lead by example, it is simple, incompetence and corruption and sheer laziness is just not acceptable in any country.

Ines is doing most of he translations nowadays. They're also posted on Pamalam's site.

Re: NOTW Top cop spearheads new probe
I'd dearly love this to be true, but I'd feel more comfortable if a named source was given.
We always seem to be left wondering & hoping, its about time they stopped pussy footing around and got on with the job instead of giving reassurances that all that can be done is being done. Lets seem some action.

It would be interesting to know if the police dealing directly with Portugal had any concerns, if these concerns were raised to those higher up, and what means were undertaken to address those concerns.
It is hard to believe that no concerns were raised about the state of the Portuguese investigation. We had concerns and we are not even police. I believe there must have been concerns raised, but what happened then. That is the important thing and should be investigated within Leic police by an outside agency.
