My own personal view on the flowers? If they have Madeleine, as I believe, then they may have wanted to apologise, in a covert way, for the suffering they have put the McCann's through. Sort of a salve for their conciences maybe.

The Albigensians were a heretic sect like the Cathars. There was a crusade called the Albigensian Crusade. You did mention the Cathars somewhere, or someone did - often the two sects are mixed up. PP
