Fantastic news, a step in the right direction.

http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/UK-News/Video-Madeleine-McCann-Scotland-Yard-To-Offer-Expertise-On-Hunt-For-Madeleine-McCann/Article/201105215990214?lpos=UK_News_Carousel_Region_0&lid=ARTICLE_15990214_Video%2C_Madeleine_McCann%3A_Scotland_Yard_To_Offer_Expertise_On_Hunt_For_Madeleine_McCann

Scotland Yard are to "bring their expertise" to the search for Madeleine McCann, the Home Office has said.

The move comes after Kate and Gerry McCann hit out at the actions of the Government department, saying it had offered "words, but no action" to assist them in the investigation.

They welcomed the review and thanked the Government for committing such a significant resource as the Met.

"This is clearly a step in the right direction," they said.

"The expertise of the Metropolitan Police is renowned and we are reassured by our Government's commitment to the search for Madeleine.

"We would like to thank Mr Cameron and the Home Secretary for committing such a significant resource as the Metropolitan Police to begin this review process.

"We would also like to thank the general public for the way in which they have continued to support our campaign to find Madeleine."

The McCanns Talk To Sky's Martin Brunt
The couple had earlier made an impassioned plea to the Prime Minister, writing him a letter and urging him to call for a joint UK-Portugal review of all the information gathered since Madeleine vanished four years ago.

Their letter began: "As a devoted father and family man, you know the importance of children."

A Home Office spokesman said: "The Prime Minister and the Home Secretary have today agreed with Sir Paul Stephenson that the Metropolitan Police will bring its particular expertise to this case."

The spokesman added that the Government hopes Scotland Yard can bring a new perspective to the case and the Home Office will be providing "the necessary financial support".

He went on: "The Government's primary concern has always been and remains the safe return of Madeleine.

I asked Kate if they had turned to the PM because they felt Theresa May was unsympathetic as she does not have children...Kate thought that was rather unfair of me.

Read Martin Brunt's blog on the McCanns
"Although she disappeared in Portugal, and the Portuguese retain the lead responsibility in the case, law enforcement agencies here have continued to follow up leads and pass information to the Portuguese authorities as appropriate."

He added that the details would not be appropriate to discuss at this stage.

At a press conference to mark the launch of her book 'Madeleine' earlier today, Kate McCann said: "When you're in a position such as the Prime Minister, you have a responsibility.

"If you're not willing to work for a child, you have to ask, 'who are you working for'?"

Mr McCann added: "We've met three separate home secretaries, and we're still not sure what the Government has actually done.

Despite huge worldwide publicity, Madeleine has never been found

"The Prime Minister does have it in his power to pick up the phone and speak to his counterpart."

He said: "We really have come to the end of our tether. We want to see action from the Government, not rhetoric."

The McCanns met Home Secretary Theresa May after she received a feasibility report on a review.

Kate MCann said: "I asked her if she had read it and she said she hadn't."

She also told them that they were not allowed to read the scoping report because it was "sensitive."

The scoping report is understood to have backed the McCanns' campaign for a joint review, as does the influential Association of Chief Police Officers.

The Portuguese police shelved their investigation after 15 months, effectively ending any official search for Madeleine, who was almost four when she disappeared.

The couple are urging supporters to sign their website petition to press the Government for the joint review.

Kate and Gerry say this is a step in the right direction, let's hope Scotland yard now order a complete review of the case which is what Kate and Gerry want.

The "scoping exercise" was ordered by Alan Johnson the previous Home Secretary prior to him leaving office and we never heard anything since.

At least Mr Cameron has done something and now we know something will actually be going on instead of this long black silence and perpetual wondering. Coming today of all days just a breakthrough of good news for a change for the McCanns.

I wonder how Goncalo Amaral is feeling tonight? With Scotland Yard and their technology on the case, very worried I would imagine, very worried indeed. lazygd4nuthn

We all know the dangers of getting too excited, especially as this involves getting co-operation from the Portuguese government and the PJ, but the PJ will find Scotland Yard harder to intimidate and mess around and stall.

Please God that this is the beginning of the end of this case and Madeleine is found and an end to her torment and to Kate and Gerry's, Sean and Amalie and the whole family. flowers

It really is good news. Scotland Yard have a great deal of expertise to bring.

And Rosie, I agree that there will be at least one copper in Portugal not too happy about this. I predict he will be heavily criticised by Scotland Yard.

I hope that this is a full review. It is hard to see what else it could be, although it could be a preliminary review to determine if further effort should be put in.
