A woman was arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a baby was rescued from a house fire, police have said.
The one-year-old girl was found crying in her cot by a neighbour in an upstairs bedroom at the house in Southmead, Bristol, after smoke was seen coming from the kitchen.
The neighbour's wife was alerted to the smoke when she saw the baby's two sisters, aged about two and three, wandering around outside the house at around 10.30am.
Her husband ran into the house and removed a smoking pan from the cooker before racing upstairs to find the baby. There were no working smoke detectors inside the house.
Police were called to the incident over concerns that no adults were in the house, Avon Fire and Rescue said.
A woman in her mid-20s, who police have confirmed as the children's mother, has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect.
The sisters were checked over by paramedics but were unharmed and are now being looked after by social services and relatives.
A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "No one was injured in the incident and there is not believed to have been any significant damage to the property. A baby rescued from the property and two young children who left the house are being cared for by social services and relatives. A woman in her mid 20s has been arrested and is helping police with their enquires."
Stephanie Mounsey, a spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue, said: "It appears the neighbour noticed the two and three-year-old girls wandering around outside the house and spotted smoke coming from the property. She approached the youngsters who told her that their one-year-old sister was still asleep inside the house upstairs in her cot."
Firefighters fitted new smoke alarms in the house and have commended the actions of the neighbour.
