Madeleine book launch 'regrettable'
http://latestnews.virginmedia.com/news/uk/2009/12/10/mccanns_set_to_attend_libel_trial
10 December 2009 12:30am Add commentsThe decision of a Portuguese policeman to launch his second book on the day a libel trial is to start concerning his first book on Madeleine McCann has been described as "regrettable" by her parents' spokesman.
Goncalo Amaral, who was involved in the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance, will launch his second book, A Mordaca Inglesa (The English Gag), at a Lisbon bookshop on Friday.
The launch, set to take place in the evening, coincides with the start of a libel trial in the Portuguese capital on the same day.
Kate and Gerry McCann were set to travel to Portugal ahead of the trial opening.
Their spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, said: "It's regrettable that Mr Amaral chooses to do this on the same day as the trial opening.
"Most people would expect him to concentrate on the trial rather than launching any new book and the court will take its own view of his activities."
Madeleine was nearly four when she went missing from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007 while her parents dined with friends nearby. Despite a massive police investigation and huge publicity worldwide, she has not been found.
Mr and Mrs McCann, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were at one point made arguidos, or formal suspects, by Portuguese police investigating their daughter's disappearance. They were questioned by detectives but their arguido status was later lifted.
Mr Amaral was involved in the initial investigation but was later taken off the case. In his first book, The Truth Of The Lie, he claimed Madeleine was dead and questioned the McCanns' account that she was taken while they were eating with friends.
After a year-long campaign by the McCanns' lawyers to prevent the publication of the book and a subsequent DVD, in September a Portuguese judge granted an injunction banning its further sale or publication.

Re: Madeleine book launch 'regrettable'
He is deliberately having the launch set for the evening to prevent the Judge from seeing it beforehand and realizing that Amaral did not obey the injunction that is already in place. He is not appearing in court because if the Judge does find out that he speaks about the case and his theories in "The English Gag" -- and I just heard on ITV News he does -- he could be arrested for contempt of court on the spot. They are trying to prevent the Judge from finding out exactly what is in The English Gag. I hope Duarte asked that the injunction not only STAY but be EXTENDED to that new piece of trash.

Bluj that won't help him. If that Judge doesn't know it by tomorrow, he/she will hear about it soon enough. It seems there's several days planned for this case/hearings.

Ahhhh ok. I thought it was a hearing tomorrow. What does he think he's doing then? Trying to embarrass the judge into getting rid of the injunction with a new book?

That makes me think he will be attending and always was going to be attending, but that they've gone back and forth on it publicly to make it seem like he's going to sweep in there in a big show at the last minute.
Vee, I don't think that the matter of the injection will take that long. I tend to think tomorrow is just a hearing about lifting the injection and not the beginning of the libel trial. But I have no idea.

Re: Madeleine book launch 'regrettable'
I have said it before but Amaral needs to get better legal advice and a better PR firm.
It seems the PR firm he is using doesnt know the difference between fame and infamy. The old saying "Any publicity is better than no publicity" is not true. Just ask Tiger Woods.
Flouting the law, trying to fool the judge, writing a further presumed libellous book etc etc, seems to be a rather odd way to go about winning a libel case that threatens to ruin him. And after all, this is not about public opinion but about the law.
And on public opinion. The public do not like to be lied to, or taken for fools. Once defamation is proven, I expect any public support (except from Morais and her other hard liners) to dwindle, or perhaps even a backlash.
