YARD ASKED TO REOPEN MADDIE CASE

Yard asked to re-open Maddie case 138901_1

MISSING: Madeleine McCann

Sunday November 8,2009

By James Murray, Investigations Editor

SCOTLAND YARD should be brought in to take control of the investigation to discover what happened to Madeleine McCann.

Kate and Gerry McCann want the Yard’s renowned kidnap team to assess an avalanche of new information after last week’s emotional internet appeal, which generated five million hits from around the world.

Portuguese police, the Sunday Express can reveal, have failed to set up a new phone line for callers to ring with information.

Last night there was fury over thedismissive response. Interpol and Europol are among 163 forces worldwide that have committed to help with the appeal.

Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria is still in charge of the Madeleine case because that is where she disappeared over two years ago.

It would say only that if credible information comes in by fax, letter or email, it would be passed to senior officers if it was deemed “significant”.

There were also reservations last night about Leicestershire Police, who are aiding the investigation from this country because the McCanns live in their catchment area, at Rothley.

Last night former Scotland Yard chief Dai Davies said it was time to let the Yard take over.

The former royal protection head said: “Madeleine is a British subject and she deserves the best, which the Yard can provide. It is time to put any daft police protocols to one side and get on with the job of finding her. It is a solvable case.

“It is astonishing and disgraceful that the Portuguese have not assigned a specific team to scrutinise leads which could provide a breakthrough in the world’s biggest child abduction case.

“It is frankly outrageous that the parents of this poor child should be hiring private detectives to conduct an investigation which should have been taken on by the Yard in the first place.

“The Yard has a kidnap squad with a brilliant success record, and access to the best Holmes computer technology, forensics and investigative techniques in the world.”

Holmes, which stands for Home Office Large Major Enquiry System, is a state-of-the-art data system designed to deal with the huge volume of information major crimes generate.

Sources claimed last night that Leicestershire detectives have not been inputting all their information on Holmes.

Police forces across Britain have cracked scores of tough cases using the system because it can be programmed to highlight suspects and analyse the value of myriad leads.

No one was available at Leicestershire Police yesterday to confirm or deny the claims.

On Tuesday, Kate and Gerry, both doctors aged 41, made new television appeals via the UK Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.

They urged: “Please take a minute and help us bring Madeleine home. Let’s hope and pray this message reaches those who know who took Madeleine and they find the strength to do the right thing.”

On Friday, a Leicestershire Police spokesman said any new information from the CEOPC initiative would be passed on to the Portuguese who would consider credible lines of inquiry.

Requests from the Portuguese to carry out new inquiries in the UK would be co-ordinated by Leicestershire Police.

New images of Madeleine, who would now be six, were shown in a video in English, Arabic, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German and Italian.

One showed how she might appear if her skin had darkened and her hair had been dyed brown to make her look like other children if she is being held in Morocco or Tunisia.

Another time-generated image showed how she might look now with her natural blonde colouring if she is being kept in Northern Europe.

While Kate and Gerry McCann believe Leicestershire detectives have worked hard, they feel Scotland Yard’s experts on kidnap, forensics and offender profiling could bring much needed impetus to the inquiry.

Madeleine vanished, aged three, from the family’s holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on the Algarve on May 3
2007.

Post by calcite51 Sun Nov 08, 2009 11:47 am

I thought Scotland Yard should have become involved at the beginning (on May 4) - they did offer to assist the PJ but if I remember correctly, this request was turned down by the PJ (headed by Amaral of course). It's unfortunate that the PJ do not seem to want to investigate any new leads and I would feel so much better if Scotland Yard was put in charge of the case and any/all new leads. If Scotland Yard is critical of the way the PJ's handled the case, then too bad so sad - there is a little girl who has been missing for 2 1/2 years - let Scotland Yard find Madeleine. Scotland Yard has the resources to find out where Madeleine is.

The answer I think is to get a petition up to have this case re-opened by Scotland Yard and who better to coordinate it than James Murray of the Sunday Express?

Post by jean Sun Nov 08, 2009 1:10 pm

It is absolutely disgusting that neither the Portuguese nor the Leicestershire police are taking no notice of these new leads. It's almost as though (the Portuguese particularly) know where Madeleine is!!!!!!!!!!! The Home Secretary (Alan Johnson), the Foreign Secretary (David Milliband) and the Prime Minister (whatever he is called!!) should be bombarded with letters. Also Charles and Camilla showed concern when Madeleine was first taken, so perhaps a letter should be addressed to them. She is a BRITISH CITIZEN so surely she has a right to be found.

Well, I didn't get the exposé of Bennett & Butler that I'd hoped for in today's papers (maybe later) .. but there is this strong call for Scotland Yard to take over .. surely now diplomatic niceties can go to Hell and common sense prevail ? The PJ should get out of the way and let the experts deal with this .. 2 1/2 wasted years .. if only the Yard had been in charge from the beginning then Madeleine might have been quickly found ...and the McCann's would have been spared so much painful struggle & unjust persecution.

Yard asked to re-open Maddie case Empty Re: Yard asked to re-open Maddie case

Post by Rosie Sun Nov 08, 2009 10:09 pm

What say we do it then? We on this forum have been calling for Scotland Yard to re-open this case and one of our members, HB I think it was, actually mentioned and explained about HOLMES and how it should be used in Madeleine's case and I say amen to that!

James Murray's front page Sunday Express story is wonderfully positive and supportive and I think he is absolutely right, now that is a brilliant piece of journalism, we are always very quick to criticise journalists when they mess up, or produce work we know is wrong, so we should be just as quick to commend them when they get it right.

As well as the positive side, he has highlighted some obvious problems, problems that we on this forum have known existed for a very long time now, we have all of us mentioned them repeatedly over the past 2.5 years, on this forum since its conception and also on various other fora and blogs, we have shouted everywhere we possibly could, now someone has heard us and they have taken the ball and ran with it and we now have to field it.
We have all despaired at the blatant ignorance of the Portuguese police, we have yelled at them and their judicial system and at their government to actually do something about this investigation, to have it re-opened, it should NEVER have been closed in the first place. We all know this and we all have known all along that Kate and Gerry were absolutely devastated when the case was closed and that they have been trying to get it reopened ever since.
Not beaten, they have struggled to keep up the pressure for the search for Madeleine amongst the most intolerable filthy accusations, the lies, they have been verbally threatened, physically threatened, lived under threats of having their home they share with their twin children "firebombed". They have been psychologically battered by people like Tony Bennett and Debbie Butler at every twist and turn, yet they have never once faltered, they are resolute and they will never stop searching for their daughter.
They have hired private detectives, they have tried to get the best there is and they have two brilliant detectives in the form of Arthur Cowley and Dave Edgar and they have a small team of people, but in all honesty and in reality, how much can they do? They have no rights under law as private investigators, they can only ask the police of any country to help them and they are at their mercy and we all know how unhelpful the Portuguese police are.

However, we expected BETTER of the Leicestershire police! I wrote on here a couple of weeks back that I was dismayed with the apathy of the Leicestershire police, in my opinion, that police force needs a kick up the backside, it is ineffectual, probably as ineffectual as the Portuguese police, so not only does Madeleine's fate rest on a set of Portuguese Keystone kops, it also rests on a set of British Keystone Kops in the shape of Leicestershire constabulary and we cannot criticise the Portuguese police, while ignoring the ineffectual behaviour of one of our own police forces.
If the LP think they are going to get away with this, they can think again, because we should all *WRITE* (not email) an actual letter to the LP demanding that they do something and ask them to explain their actions and themselves, they need reminding they work for us and we pay their wages! While we are at it we need to ask them why they did nothing about the STALKING and THREATENING behaviour of Debbie Butler, Grenville green and Helen Davies-Green, these people broke the law and the LP did not need a complaint from the McCanns to act, yet they did nothing and when someone phoned them up to ask, they pretended they knew nothing about it.

Not good enough Leicestershire Police and today I (and I hope others) will be writing to your chief constable to ask what is going on and what progress they have made, and what actions they have taken, and what they are doing to help Kate and Gerry McCann. We should also write directly to Alan Johnson the British Home secretary, and let him know in no uncertain terms that we expect him to do something and to act, NOW, not next week, next month, too much time has been lost already, there is a little girl that needs to be found and returned to her parents where she belongs. No more prevarication and no more procrastination, Johnson must act and act NOW and we are not going to take no for an answer!

Note to Leicestershire chief constable and Alan Johnson: Don't think that we will shout today and forget this tomorrow, we do not work like that, we keep on until someone starts to take notice and we will NOT be letting this go!

Does anyone who posts on this board live in Alan Johnson's constituency? If you do, please consider writing to him, he is duty bound to reply to you. Alan Johnson is member of Parliament for Hull West & Hessle johnsona@parliament.uk

Remember the Leicestershire police have the power to request that Scotland Yard take this case over.

Remember this case IS solvable, we have been told this repeatedly, so why hasn't the Leicestershire police done anything to solve it? Or are they all incompetent buffoons like Goncalo Amaral?

How much longer Leicestershire Police? Already you have one sickening and tragic incident on your patch through your own incompetence and buck passing, what are you waiting for? Another? Remember the mother with her disabled daughter who killed her child and herself rather than live on YOUR patch, because the Leicestershire police IGNORED their pleas? You may have forgotten them, or prefer that we forget them, just like you would prefer that we forget Madeleine and the way her parents are being persecuted in their own homes too (sound familiar?) It should do, this was exactly why two citizens who needed your help and did not get it, killed themselves!

Police criticised by inquest jury

Yard asked to re-open Maddie case _46423448_pilkingtons_226_pa

The actions of police and two councils were partly to blame for the deaths of a mother and her disabled daughter, an inquest jury ruled.
The jury decided Fiona Pilkington, 38, committed suicide and unlawfully killed her daughter Francecca Hardwick, 18.
The inquest heard the family had endured years of abuse at the hands of neighbours in Barwell, Leicestershire.
Home Secretary Alan Johnson said the police and councils had "some hard lessons" to learn.

Here is our chance to apply pressure and keep it up until Scotland Yard is asked to take the case of Madeleine McCann a BRITISH CHILD and a minor and put EVERY available resource at Madeleine's disposal, until we discover who took Madeleine, where she is now and that she is returned home to her parents.
When contacting the Home secretary, we also need to mention that we are dissatisfied with the way Leicestershire police have handle this investigation thus far.

Remember too, that Jim Gamble of CEOPS is also investigating this case, they are an official law enforcement agency and we should all point this out to Alan Johnson and Chris Eyre!

Hopefully the Sunday Express will help us with this, they have carried out some pretty strong petitions in the past with some success, let's hope, this will be another for them.

Post by dianeh Mon Nov 09, 2009 9:19 am

We said a long time ago, when the Portuguese closed the case that Scotland Yard should take it over, as Madeleine is a British citizen. It seems like we were right, and they are able to do it.

So please, all of you Brits, write those letters, and spread the word. How about having the article, and the request for the letter as a new article on the blog? That way it will come up on a Google alert.

And Rosie, once again, you are right.

And a special thanks to James Murray for such a good article.

Yard asked to re-open Maddie case Empty UK police chief hits back at Portuguese detective’s claims

UK police chief hits back at Portuguese detective’s claims

Yard asked to re-open Maddie case Chris+Eyre

8 November 2009 |
The head of Leicestershire Police has rejected claims from a former Portuguese detective that his officers withheld a witness statement from the Madeleine McCann inquiry.

Chris Eyre, the Temporary Chief Constable, said “I can assure you that at no time were statements withheld and not passed on.”

Goncalo Amaral, the Algarve detective who was removed the inquiry early on, made his claim in a book, which is now banned.

Mr Eyre responded after Freedom of Information requests were submitted by the Sunday Express.

A team of Leicestershire family officers went to Portugal on 5 May 2007 to support the McCanns.

It has also emerged that the Foreign Office has withheld details about the investigation so as not to damage relations between Britain and Portugal.
An individual submitted Freedom of Information requests to get details of negotiations by John Buck, Britain’s former ambassador to Portugal.

The then Information Commissioner Richard Thomas refused in case it caused Portugal to lose trust in Britain’s discretion.

Hi Chris, now that is very interesting reading, I made two posts about Chris Eyres yesterday.

I am asking that people write an actual letter to him, asking what is being done to help the Madeleine investigation, remember Chris eyres does have the power to request that Scotland Yard take over Madeleine's investigation.

Here are the address again you will also see that I have supplied the email address of Alan Johnson the Home Secretary, please can people email him too, requesting that Scotland Yard take over this investigation.

This case *IS* solvable, lets apply pressure, it is time something was done about this, actually past time!

Madeleine McCann is a Britis subject, she is also a minor, it is time now that this country took the leading role, we expect it, we ask for it and we demand it!

Yard asked to re-open Maddie case Empty Re: Yard asked to re-open Maddie case

Post by jean Tue Nov 10, 2009 11:23 am

My email to Alan Johnson sent today ......

Mr Johnson
I have followed the case of Madeleine McCann since she was abducted on 3 May 2007 and now feel that it is time that the UK Government stopped 'pussyfooting' around and did something productive to help her parents find her. I believe that she is still alive and 'findable' and would request that you instruct the services of the specialist team who are based at Scotland Yard to take over the case. Madeleine's parents have been through hell and back and are doing everything they can to find their precious daughter. This latest campaign headed by Jim Gamble of CEOP is the most hard hitting yet, and by all accounts has had a massive response, which the McCanns and their two private detectives cannot possibly cope with alone. Despite all of this the Portuguese police still refuse to re-open the case. They have mishandled the case right from day one, and the lead detective is charged with various offences in another case which is eerily similar to that of the abduction of Madeleine. The McCanns will never stop looking for her, and I'm sure that if you were in their position you would do the same. It has been two and three quarter long years now since they have been able to touch, hug and love their little girl. SHE IS A BRITISH CITIZEN AND A MINOR AND SHOULD BE GIVEN THE SPECIALIST ATTENTION FROM THIS COUNTRY THAT SHE DESERVES. INSTRUCT SCOTLAND YARD AND LETS BRING HER HOME.

Yard asked to re-open Maddie case Empty Re: Yard asked to re-open Maddie case

Well done Jean, I advise to all of my friends, to make stronger pressure, with the purpose of bring Scotland Yard to take the lead in this investigation, with the help of the PI´s team and Jim Gamble. The more pressure the better, the more emails sent the better.

Absolutely fantastic Clairesy, this is the kind of large response we need, if we do this, then we are applying pressure and they will have to act.
